Massdrop Staff Picks: Meet Alex

To help you get to know the people behind our Staff Picks collection, we asked each team member a little about themselves, how they got interested in their favorite community, and what else they’re doing these days. Read the Q&A, check out their picks, and use the comment section to ask questions or just say hello.

Meet Alex, who’s all about the Blades Community.

Q: What do you do at Massdrop? A: I’m a copywriter on the creative team at Massdrop. I write product descriptions, emails, articles, and lots of other stuff related to our many communities. I’m also office ping pong champ . . . just gonna put that out there for the haters. Q: What do you like most about working at Massdrop? A: I’d have to say the variety of cool products that end up at my desk. From spinning tops and machetes to keyboards and toothpick crossbows, every day is something totally new. The people are alright, too, I suppose ;). Q: How did you get into the Blades Community? A: When I first started here, nearly 2 years ago, one of the first communities I began writing for was EDC, which, at the time, encompassed all of our knives. As is the case with any new community, you really have to understand it to write confidently about the products involved in it. So, naturally, I started looking up tons of info on blade steels, types of knives, designers, etc. And, I’m a dude, so I kinda gravitated towards all that sharp, badass stuff anyways. Q: What are some of your favorite products in that community? A: I really like gentleman’s folders. I typically carry one because I don’t need my knife too often each and every day. It’s more of a backup. They’re super sleek, don’t take up too much space in the pocket, and are usually plenty tough enough when I need them. As far as specific products, the Boker Urban Trapper comes to mind, the Ferrum Forge Crux, and really any of the wooden-handled knives from Maserin. I really dig those. You can’t go wrong with a good old Kershaw, either. Q: What are some of your other hobbies/interests? A: I ONLY LIKE BLADES . . . okay, no, actually I’ve kind of gotten into watches recently. I’m also a big sports fan (Oregon Ducks, Oakland Raiders, and Golden State Warriors represent!). Audiophile has inevitably gotten me into music a bit more, too. I just bought our Fostex T-X0 Planar Magnetic Headphones because I tried them on and the sample sounded like butter melting into my ears as I lay down on a cloud. I’m not joking.

Damn, no love for the Gent? It's currently my most carried "gentleman's" (suitable for office carry) knives.
We have some perfect models, but we don't know how to get into massdrop.
Any chance for some Chris Reeve Tactical Knives, like the Green Berets, on Massdrop?
Nope, sorry - wish we could but CRK is not interested in selling on Massdrop.
Figured, no problem.
I followed a similar trajectory since joining Massdrop, though I think I was originally enticed by some AKG headphones. I gravitate towards the blades and edc communities, but soon I'll be trying out the Fostex T-X0 headphones the same as you. That a non-audiophile such as yourself (if that's a correct description) likes them is even more promising than the praise audiophiles give, at least to another non-audiophile like me.
This guy is SHARP!

I make a point of it. :)
