Phone jacks on receivers are mostly an afterthought, a throw it in feature because Realistic did it way back - thing,, because it's useful and HAM radios had them;) not for quality... though I am curious as to the quality of the old HAM setups. You will be short-changing yourself until you move up to at least mid-fi, where,, yeah,, you know there is more,, but diminishing returns... and true mid-fi does sound incredible already... that is having no weak links in that chain... rastusI get what you're saying, and I reckon that I might have gambled on buying mid-range headphones with entry-level equipment, but unfortunately that's what I have got. I was about to buy the FiiO K3, which should be quite better than the K1, but it just recently has become available in my country, while I had to buy it for Christmas (impatience is terrible, isn't it?...)

SPAstefNo issue, I have posed the Elex as a starter set to save money;) you made a good choice with the HD6XX. I recently got an Audio-gd R2R 11 as a gift, a very nice dac/amp, a move I can recommend.

rastusNot really budget-friendly, but looks to be quite powerful (and aesthetically pleasing)

rastusIt's tempting but I'm a student so I cannot buy everything I want, for now I will have to stick with what I have. Do you think it will still make a significant step forward compared to my current heaphones (HD449), even without all the nice gear?

SPAstefYes, it will improve on a HD449, I'm sure, more of course with the HD6XX. I looked at separates and combos in this price range, and chose the R-2R 11, not disappointed, but elated with the sound at the price point, review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzr2efjAaU8 Choices; digital photo of,, or the actual oil painting: "Sound quality differencies between R2R 11 and NFB-11:
The differencies between those units are only in tonal quaities            NFB-11 sound is detail, dynamic, controled but not bright or hash.            R2R 11 has Smooth, coherent and analogue sound quality and has no emphasise on any frequencies in audio spectrum           E.g : You can image the NFB11.28 is like a highly defined digital photo but the R2R 11 is more like real oil painting.            If you are a new audiophile , you should go for the NFB11.28 over R2R 11, NFB11.28 has modern sound quality may better fit for new audiophile." http://www.audio-gd.com/R2R/R2R11/R2R11EN.htm
