LWNYClike seeing another sleeper headphone amp, disguised as a speaker amp, a Cary CAD-300SEI; which of those nice cans match best with it?

LWNYCWhoa! A Nagra DAC! Seriously for me as an upgrade path from my Chord Hugo TT2, I'd probably go Nagra Classic DAC, DCS Bartok, or a Lampizator DAC. How do you like the Nagra?

JoeyG13I first heard it 4 years ago in London, then auditioned it for 2 hours in a sound room in NYC. I have not heard anything more musical, lifelike, from any other DACs before or since. I recently added the Chord M Scaler for my Chord DAVE. Still, the Nagra HD DAC or the current iteration, both sounds just that more natural than the Chords. Mind you, I have quite a few Chord gear, love the original Hugo until I heard the Nagra. Find a dealer and listen to it. Put on some Adele, Streisand, or Ailee. Barber or Four Seasons. They all appears like a few feet to in the room, around you with your eyes closed or wide open. Happy hunting.

LWNYCOh I've heard the Nagra at Common Wave Hifi here in Los Angeles playing the YG Acoustics Sonja. They said the speaker placement hasn't been fine tuned, but even then, wow! So absolutely clear, transparent, and up front. I am curious to hear headphones on it, but yeah, love the Nagras. Have you heard any of the DCS gear?

JoeyG13Oh yes, looked heavily into the dCS Vivaldi before "walking into" the Nagra set. I thought the Vivaldi was "the one" but Nagra became my red pill. HD DAC is even more supple and delicate with the human voice. I could listen an entire day on headphones. The Abyss can by driven by the Nagra HD DAC headphone out. Additionally, the headphone gets that sweet jan 5963 double triode output analog sound. It's so much better than most dedicate headphone amps; especially the solid state ones.

LWNYCThat's amazing. Did you also look into the Nagra Tube Dac and how do they differ from the HD Dac? What about the HD Dac X?

JoeyG13i did in early 2019 while in Hong Kong. The shop was not set up to compare units. My take was the tube DAC was more natural than DAC X. Because of COVID I have not auditioned either any further.
