HD58x or HD6XX ?

more_vert
I am very confuse for choosing either a HD58x or a HD6xx , after so much searching on the internet I feel like it's more hard to choose which one is better tbh. I want to choose like the best overall headphone (of those 2), price will not be bother me. I will also buy an dac and amp after i decided what to buy... so don't need to worry about am I buying an amp or not. I know they are both good but I just want an answer on which is better... the more I search , the more I lost (for real) . I've heard that someone said HD58x is best overall but theres someone who also said that HD6xx is MORE better in terms on sound quality . Please reply with more simple words but not like "this is warmer" , "this has more treble" , "this has more on highs" , "this is better in lows" ....... I am a newbie to this audio world so I don't know what is those :( Explain with a reason will be great. Thanks in advance !

It depends how you prefer your subjective sounds. 650 has much better vocal reproduction than 58x and is slightly better plus you get the presentation box!! Watch dms review or metal 571 online. They tell it how it is. The 6xx is as good a set your ever gonna need. Good on tubes and a USB dac, but you'll need a USB c lightning cable to use it on your phone. The HD58X can plug and play straight from the phone if it's got a 3.5mm aux port. But the 6xx is a step up for sure. I use the 650 with an apogee groove and that lightning lead and even spotify sound's brill. .

I think the HD58x is a good choice if you not going to get a amp or don't have a amp at the moment. I went for the HD6xx i knew I was going to get a amp at some point. To my ear it played ok via a motherboard with pretty good buit-in DAC/AMP that supported up to 300ohm's an ASUS top end motherboard. Then the AMP came and at first was not too much of a big difference but not that my ear is more critical I can tell the difference it right away. Also keep in mind that HD58x will also sound better with a amp.

The HD6XX series tends to be more popular. YMMV. How you perceive sound depends on a number of factors and can change over time. Do your research, try both sets if possible. Try other brands. While numbers on a page can be informative, they don't tell the whole story. After trying a number of different sets, I chose the HD600 head phones. That's what ended up working for me. You may end up making a completely different choice. Have fun on your quest.

I hated the hd58x from the first listen. Very muted on high mids, thin in the highs, boomy in the bass. Sennheiser ended up to ruin a bestseller in order to please the mass.

i like more high mids, i don't mind the added bass, the voices have a little hole in the presence like the dt880. I use this kind of hp to study classical singing, so the 600 is my workhorse

I like the HD6XX better, HD58X sounds too grainy and lack of resolution to me, sounds almost identical when plugged to my 3 amps, including CTH, FIIO Q1 MK2(sounded like crap in balanced mode), and SMSL SAPII; where HD6XX sounds completely different on all 3 amps.

A significant difference between the two is that the 58x has an impedance of 150 Ohm and is easier to drive while the 6xx has an impedance of 300 Ohm and needs a good amp to perform at its best.

Yup. I find the 6XX easier to drive than my AKG 7XX.

Let’s start with what’s not different: For all intents and purposes, build quality is identical. They take the same cables. Both do a good job with every style of music. Whichever you pick, you’ll be happy. Don’t stress about making a wrong choice, because there’s not one. If a wine analogy helps, this is a bit like asking whether a Pinot is better than a Cabernet—the right answer depends first and foremost on your preferences, and your answer may change with the meal you’re pairing. Nevertheless, a good wine is a good wine, and both of these headphones are good in that sort of way. A few months ago I decided to buy either a 58x or 6xx for a longtime friend as a gift, and I sat down to do some A-B listening between the two. Without getting into esoteric audiophile terminology, the overall presentation of the 58x feels more like swing music—vibrant, lively, in-your-face—whereas the 6xx feel more like lounge—chill, sultry, refined. My friend is a metal-head and guitar player, and listening to some of his favorites, guitar riffs were a bit more forward and detailed on the 58x. I got him those, because I figured they’re probably a better overall match for his favorite listening: diving into a wall of sound and rocking out. Meanwhile, I like all types of music, and I enjoy taking in the overall “big picture” of tracks—analyzing layers of instruments and taking in how all the various parts interplay with one another. The 6xx sound is a bit more open; I prefer them over the 58x for the ease with which I can indulge my own wanderings through chill tracks. But I prefer the 58x for things like intimate vocals, heavy rock, maybe EDM. Back to the wine analogy, it takes a certain level of snobbery before a particular wine varietal makes any difference whatsoever to your enjoyment of a meal, and that only develops after plenty of experience, gobs of over-analysis, and a healthy dose of lost perspective. Since you’re coming from a place of inexperience, just pick a flavor—jam or chill—and start enjoying. Get familiar, then come back later and sample something else if you like.

HD 58X: Uses better-behaved drivers from a HD 700. More treble energy than HD 6XX, but HD 58X is slightly grainy. Also has better extension in the sub-bass. Less "warm" and more neutral than the HD 6XX. HD 6XX: Essentially a HD 650 that's dark blue. Less treble energy, but smooth and well-behaved. Mid-bass hump is tasteful and doesn't bleed into mids. More resolving than the HD 58X; I still consider the HD 6XX one of the most resolving headphones that I've tried. This last point makes the HD 6XX especially transparent to changes in your system; it scales almost infinitely, something the HD 58X can't do. In essence, I think the HD 58X is more "fun" and the HD 6XX is more "serious."

"Neutral" =/= boring. The subjective terms I use really mean jack squat unless it's used in direct comparison. I hate statements/reviews that don't use comparisons; they tell me nothing. If you want something more "neutral" as you defined, I'd also look at the HD600. With a warmer/darker chain it works better than HD650/6XX.

is subjective. I prefer the HD58X. you really cant go wrong with either. If you had both you might pick one over the other. if you have only one you will be happy camper.
