This long-time member would be more sanguine about a rebrand if MD hadn’t  increasingly ignored comments/requests by women customers about specific products of late. Here’s a hint— if you want this site under any name to grow its base, don’t take loyal users for granted. If you offer a men’s wearable or equipment line, offer the women’s. And when scores of members request a women’s version of a high-volume drop, over several months, for freak’s sake have the common business sense, if not the courtesy,  to at least reply.   You’ve already lost me, but you might hang on to some of the other gals, plus the guys who care about—and shop with—us.

Totally get the frustration. We actually renamed the "Men's" Communities to be gender-agnostic specifically because of this. It's something we've wanted to change for a while and now we're getting closer. It's our effort as a part of this rebrand to cater more specifically for women.

Gender specific women, or gender agnostic women? As if buying women’s underwear wasn’t already complicated enough!

Are you actually carrying more feminine clothes, though? Like, I'm pretty GNC, so I'm perfectly happy to shop "men's" clothes, but that doesn't apply to most women, and I've never seen any clothing or accessories here that were anything but explicitly masculine and designed to fit cis men's bodies. Just because the section is called "Apparel" now doesn't mean it's actually gender-agnostic.

You'd be correct, actually. Changing the name was only the first step. Now, as time goes on, we'll be aiming to broaden the category when it comes to merchandising and discussion.

How many women are involved on staff and in community support roles? Because I don't remember seeing uhhhh a single one, ever. Maybe there are a bunch and I've just not noticed, but if not, getting more women on the team (especially women of color) should be the first step, before any meaningless cosmetic changes. 'Cause a bunch of dudes trying to figure out "what women want" to make money off us while not actually hiring any women is not a great look, and communities moderated primarily by men inevitably tend toward tolerance of misogynistic attitudes (however subtle and invisible to those men) that can drive away women customers.

We hire alot of women in general actually across the board, but our community support, at least as far as people getting out there and talking to people on the site in discussions like this as I do, is still pretty small, though we try our best. I sincerely hope you've never felt any disdain, misogyny, or any kind of those attitudes here as that's something we would never tolerate and if you ever do, you should tag me immediately. We have a lot of great women at the company on all of our teams so I can promise you we're not just a bunch of dudes. I don't think we'd have as much success if we were to be honest.

I guess you haven't even looked at their site "About us" page. Lots of token minorities/women there. I hope you're being satirical.

"I sincerely hope you've never felt any disdain, misogyny, or any kind of those attitudes here as that's something we would never tolerate and if you ever do, you should tag me immediately." This is a great example of what I'm talking about. You clearly mean well, but I can't imagine a woman ever saying this to another woman, because experience has taught us that this kind of stuff is inevitable in any online community where a majority of the vocal userbase is men. Massdrop certainly doesn't seem to tolerate any blatantly obvious misogyny (or racism, homophobia, etc.), which is great, but you're still going to run across the more "casual" stuff, microaggressions, etc. There's another comment thread on this post that you and I both replied to where a few men were responding negatively to how women were included in the namechange announcement video:
  • "..because attractive women everywhere enjoy collecting knives"
  • "You, [thread OP], and I all know knives, keyboards, and audio are all some 90% male hobbies at the high end put forward on this site, and yet all three of them are represented by women in your promotion?"
  • "And I notice they chose not to use an attractive female to advertise their women's underwear products. Was hoping MD would take that community in the direction of Victorias Secret"
None of this is blatantly misogynistic, nor particularly actionable from a moderation standpoint unless you want to get really aggressive about it. But these comments are all rooted in misogyny, from framing the mere presence of women as pandering to referring to women as "females."

@Duncan Ah, good, another example just dropped into our laps: Referring to the employees who are women and/or people of color as "tokens," who are presumably there to appease "special interests" versus being the best people qualified, while the white men clearly earned their jobs. Lmaoooooo.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Though we're always improving our moderation as we go forward, I'll be noting this behavior more specifically. Really want to do everything I can to make sure this is a place for everyone, and that the things that we condone on the site reflect that. I appreciate you sharing all of this.

Changes in Several Drop Communities and Interests
Hey everyone, There are going to be some changes in the near future for several of our communities and we want to share the details with you as well as explain why we made these decisions. We have recently been taking a fresh look at our offering, and thinking deeply about how we can deliver the best community experiences. We wanted to take a step back and really understand what’s working, and what we think needs to be improved Through feedback from the community about the current user experience, and our own explorations, we’ve arrived at some changes we think are necessary to improve the experience for the majority of our members. Starting today, we will begin to implement some of these changes by adjusting how you can find certain communities and products within our site, as well as merging a couple communities and sunsetting several others. The short version: We plan to improve discoverability on our site for the most active communities like Blades/EDC, Mech Keys...

Dante: Please introduce a new circle of hell for web designers!
Do modern web designers do ANY usability testing? Today I received an email "It's not bragging if it's true" soliciting pictures of a recent purchase (Planck Mechanical Keyboard Kit V6). This leads to a "pictures" section of the product page which surprisingly was empty. So I uploaded a couple of pictures. It prompted me to type a caption which I did. The pictures are published without the caption (even when clicked on to view full size) and with a procrustic truncation over which I get no control (that I can find). This is pointless and makes me look stupid, so I want to delete them, but I cannot find any way to do that either!

Update on Community Changes
Hi all,  We expect this to be our final update for the foreseeable future with regards to Community structuring and any big-picture changes.  Notable Changes: Ultralight will merge with Outdoors into a singular community. Flashlights and Blades will rejoin EDC as a singular community. Tech will no longer source new products, for the time being. Writing will return as a place to have discussions, but sourcing new products will be on pause. For Context: Our goal is always, and has always been, to add value to our community, whether that is through creating something new, bringing a community project to life, or simply leveraging the group-buy dynamic to get the best products for our members. We only enter a community after an ample amount of thought and consideration, and we only leave one after even more. At this point in time, however, continuing to support some communities is not compatible with our business.  In the past, we have typically found someone with the passion and...

No mor kitchen and quilt/knitting communities?
I just came by and had to see that there is no longer a cooking, quilting and knitting community available. Most of the other stuff is of little interest for me, so don't expect that I will stay if they stay cancelled.

Is Drop going under?
I seem to be getting a lot of clearance emails from Drop recently and now that they're actually selling many of their high end headphones at reduced prices along with emails saying that there are no future plans to restock (see https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/dpdjtb/psa_fostex_trx00s_on_dropcom_sorta_eol/) Either they are planning some relaunch of their headphones (which I hope is the case) or they are clearing out stock in preparation for some liquidation. I see that their daily offerings have become stale and their removal of the different communities didn't really bode well for the company. Thoughts?

On the Verge of Deleting My Drop Account
This has been brewing for some time. I think I've finally reached the end with Drop. Yes there is the occasional "good" deal that's worth considering, but these are becoming far too sparse and fleeting. And then there is the common issue of incomplete or even totally inaccurate information in the descriptions, wrong pictures, or basic pictures missing (like full shots of the rear of an audio component... duh!). And even when pointed out, no change ever seems to be made, as evidenced by drops that have been running for multiple years and still contain issues commented on the first time around. What broke this camel's back? The great (sic) deals available in the first ever Drop Warehouse "Sale." First item I checked, the Kyocera 12oz Travel Mug for nearly $30 shipped... which I believe is even more than when it originally dropped (pretty sure there was free shipping). Like I did before, I'll instead order another from Amazon for just $20. For me, it has simply become a waste of...
