mechanical, try the current Preonic keyboard, if your not interested in the smallest keyboard you can get away with, this one will be a great introduction. once your hooked you can get 5 more $200 keyboards and eventually settle on a custom Preonic-Lets_split pimped out with stereo speakers and a POS printer for no reason other then you can can say "No I can't hang out and do crack naked with you this weekend, I need to buy more register tape for my keyboard, what do you mean you never heard of such a thing..." (by the way, this keyboard is possible, but does not exist, so you'll spend a lot of money getting everything done custom and your wife will leave you, and your kids will run when you try to pick them up at school, but what do they know).

Writing...hmm...
I suggest consulting the fountain pen community.
On a more serious note, if you're acclimated to QWERTY, a conventional QWERTY plank might be the most efficient; but ergonomic keyboards like the ergodox may be more comfortable. But I can't speak for you ; try out as many options as you can, and go with the one that you find the most suitable for you.

I suggest the Matias Ergo Pro. It has 4 dedicated keys to the left of your pinky for undo, cut, copy, and paste, 4 keys a writer would heavily depend upon. The split keyboard with its variety of tenting options has the ergonomics for long writing sessions. The alps switches are excellent.

It's personal preference really. I prefer MX Clears or MOD M (tactile) switchs for typing and gaming, but some people find them fatiguing. Your best bet is to either go to a meet-up or find a store that carrys a few different kinds and try them out.
