Looking for headphones ~$150

more_vert
Hey, I posted this in r/headphoneadvice, but only got one response. Perhaps you nice folks could help me out! A few requirements:
  1. Around $150 or less (ideally); used or new
  2. Over-ear or in-ear; my ears get SUPER sore when they're pressed against my head
  3. Wired; already have AirPods for the convenience/Apple environment factor

What I listen to (in order by genre listening frequency):
Jazz/Bebop - Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Roy Hargrove, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Thelonius Monk, Jamie Cullum, Harry Connick (older recordings), etc. Swing & Standards - Mel Torme (Jerry... The Velvet Fog!), Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Billy Eckstine, Johnny Hartman, etc. LoFi/Electric - Joji, Knowmadic, Saib, Aso, Sworn, Philanthrope, etc. Rock - Toto, Rush, Thrice, Whitesnake, Scorpions, Warrant, Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Poison, etc. Folk/Folk Rock/Surf Rock - Jack Johnson, Dan Mills, Avett Brothers, etc. Higher quality experiences I've had thus far: Wife has some Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250s that she uses in her recording studio. Liked, didn't love. Coworker let me try his AKG K553 Pros that he may be willing to sell to me for $60. I really like those. They have good clarity across the board and didn't punch out the melody with overpowering bass. Also let me listen to his Sennheiser HD 6XXs which were a true delight. The open back really made me feel like I might have been at a live show. A friend let me listen through his HD58X Jubilees the first time I tried 1P while on the peak and maybe it was just my state of mind, but, I was absolutely loving them. Personally, I own AirPods, Logitech G230s and G35s for gaming and watching at my desktop. I like the sound quality of my G230s, but don't love the cut in quality made to accomodate the "7.1" in the G35 phones. Where I'll be doing most of my listening: In a quiet room, in a comfortable chair in my house. I recognize that are dramatically different genres which is why I'd prefer flat-tuned headphones. After all my research, I've continually heard wonderful things about the Audio Technica ATH-M[X]0x series as the best overall headphone series for they're varying prices. I'm also willing to put some cash down on an amp on top of the headphone cost if I need one. I'm open to any and all suggestions that fit my requirements. Thank you all!

For everything you just said and based on power requirements, I'd agree with the 58X recommendations. AKG K or Q7 series might work better but would need an amp, and the HE4XX need an amp more as well.

this recommendation has never been so easy and obvious: Sennheiser HD58X Jubilee!

Just sold my HD58X because they didn't beat my oldschool "first highend phones" AKG K340 in the clarity and truth of highs. Try some film phones, like https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-hifiman-he4xx-planar-magnetic-headphones

At the risk of being called a homer, I got a pair of the Massdrop x Nuforce EDC3 and I am in love. Incredible detail. They walk all over my old Shure SE215LTD.

I am a Sennheiser fan and have the HD 6xx and the actual HD 580 that the 58x is based on. If you are an accuracy fan the 6xx is better while being musical. Fans of the 58x like the (slightly) greater sense of bass. I am also a Grado fan and regularly use the SR 125's. (Apparently I am more a fan of open back than closed back phones.) I am writing to ask, what is your source? If it is a stereo amp or receiver, then you should have the power to bring the best out of whichever headphone you choose. If you are using an iPod or smartphone than I recommend an investment in either a portable amp of DAC . This made a huge difference for me when I wanted to use my better 'phones with portable devices.

Just to add,, just bought a third pair of HD580's off ebay to gift with an upgraded Aune T1. A co-worker let me listen to his 58X's and they out-perform their price point, pretty much remaining true to the original 580, with a bit more low-end punch added in, as you see mentioned in reviews.
