TwoSun TS111, D2 CF/Ti The TS111 is a Night Morning design, and to me, sort of shows their evolution as a knifemaker. A lot of the earlier NMD TwoSuns had eye-catching lines and wicked grinds and intricate CNC milling, but there were some issues alongside that flashiness. The clips were bad, the blades were all thick like survival knives, the entire knives were very heavy in the pocket, and the ergonomics were a little less refined than you might expect, given all the beveling and grinding. The TS111 on the other hand is comparatively slim, with more curve to it.

That scale looks nice. Not perfect, mind you. If this were a US blade, that carbon fiber scale would probably be a little more beveled on the edge, and those two titanium T6 torx connectors would be countersunk. That pivot might have a collar around it, right? At least, that'd be the expectation. For us, these sort of materials go hand in hand with higher price points which go hand in hand with better artisanship -- you just expect those things. This seems utilitarian by comparison. Not rough, but almost what they used to call 'brutalist'. The thing is, to a lot of the guys in Yangjiang, CF and Ti are just another material they work with, and not necessarily something associated with a handcrafted look or price. So they turn out CF scales with more or less the same quality that they do with G-10 or Micarta. Are they bad? Not at all. But we have the cognitive dissonance because we're used to associating CF with handcrafted standards of manufacture, so something like the lip of a screw sticking out a tenth of a micron above the surface of the CF scale catches the eye. The other thing to consider is -- right now, buying this stateside is possibly a $200 proposition due to the scarcity of employed US skilled labor and corporate price controls. I picked this up for around $40. And it's got a nice sheepsfoot blade.

Flips quick. Nothing flashy, but smooth. The handfeel is good. With some knives, you get the sense that someone might have hand ground the prototype, or otherwise manually produced it by trial and error. You don't often get that sense with a TwoSun -- you get the sense that the entire life cycle of some, maybe most TwoSuns, takes place on CAD. But the 111, even with its obvious CNC hallmarks like that perfect arc on both sides of the handle, seems more built around the human hand than many TwoSuns. It's the general trend there lately, which is nice. You can't sell handfeel in an ad or with a picture, but it's a huge factor. After all it's something that impacts you every single time you use the knife. NMD and Wong have always had eye catching design, but a lot of their earlier work is heavy and a bit thick. So it's good to see them catching up with the ergonomics and having a little faith in their materials, now that they've caught people's attention with their designs, and slimming down the knives a bit. Keeping it simple on the inside, too.

KVT bearings running on races, titanium hardware, detent ramp, metal backspacer, two screws and two pins. Funny thing: TwoSun clips don't usually bolt through from the bottom side. Usually see that on Y-Starts. I like the blade. You know what they say about D2: that it's impossible to dull, and then it's impossible to sharpen once you do. There's something to that. The alloy mix of D2 is such that the larger structure of the steel is rock solid, but there's few small carbides to fill out a honed edge, so if you aren't using industrial gear that you're skilled with, it's maddeningly hard to put a truly sharp edge on D2. If I resharpen it, I tend to leave a coarse grind on it for that very reason. The truth is, a nice toothy coarse grind does nice things for D2, nice enough not to piss around trying to hone it. At least, that's how this guy sees it. At the same time, if one of you has a decent method for putting a full on razor edge on D2, I'm all ears. I expect a lot of us would be.
