JDM Seiko Service/Repair?

more_vert
About a year ago I bought a JDM Seiko Alpinist (green dial) to wear as a daily watch. The first six months I owned the watch it kept really accurate time with about +- 3~5 seconds daily; however, at some point it began running slow to any where between 5 to 15 minutes per day! Suffice to say I stopped wearing it and switched to my Glycine SST12 I got from the Drop. And not too long after I switched to wearing IWC Portofino Jubilee Edition that my fiancee (now my wife) got me as a wedding present. Today, I took the Seiko Alpinist to a local watch repair shop with great Yelp reviews to see if I could have the Alpinist serviced. The repair person told me that he doesn't work on JDMs. He stated that Seiko movements are now modular and requires replacing those modules rather than replacing individual parts. He also said some part are actually glued rather than secured with screws. I don't know how true what the guy said was but he refused to work on it. So now I'm debating whether I should send it to Seiko USA for a service which costs $260 for the 6R15 movement not including any tax and shipping. Is this even worth the effort? Really, the only reason I wanted get the Seiko fixed was because I wanted to wear it when I'm on business travels where I don't want to subject my IWC to the likes of TSA "security" and foreign hotels. Now I'm replacing the battery on my 20 year old Tag Heuer 2000 as my travel watch.

I’m in the same boat. My Alpinist is running more than a minute slow per day and I’m trying to figure out what to do. What did you end up doing?
