Working Knives

more_vert
If you collect knives, the secret is to figure out things they can be doing for you when you aren’t in your pocket. We should swap some ideas, yeah? I will go first: some of mine are tasked with guarding my booze.

Bet it’s noisy when the wind blows?

It's an interesting visual effect, but I fail to see how the hanging knifes would protect the booze from anyone not suffering from some serious aichmophobia. You don't have any edges exposed there -- what's to stop anyone from simply reaching in and grabbing any bottle they want? :)

WigdaddyWell, me, mostly. The barrier is symbolic as you note, so anyone can put their hand through it and it's obviously there as kind of a gag; however its construction suggests that it was envisioned and built by someone well outside the normal boundaries of civilized behavior who appears to be heavily armed and willing to spend inordinate amounts of time pursuing their vision. You know, it's kind of like someone looking at the back door of a house they're thinking about breaking into, and then noticing that the owner appears to raise pit bulls and make rapid fire shotguns... and after some contemplation, they move on down the street to the next mark. It's those little lessons that people help put together themselves as they notice things, that really get their attention and end up being the ones they understand best, knowwhatImean? Exposed blades would def be more hardcore, but I find soft , suggestive deterrence like this can be extremely effective and leave a longer lasting impression :) And besides, I have enough knife scars as it is.

This is from a real ad I get sent from a knife seller. I love the Leek, but who on earth is gonna go 'I'm usually skeptical of the quality of knives that are advertised to me via mass email but now that three people from the Internet with no last names have given it a thumbs up, I'm all in, baby'? I mean, it's the Leek. Surely they don't gotta go so low for a 5 star rating?

same except the swords and fixed blades , i have a huge amount of Spyderco bags and mtech and generic bags or rolls and went to academy and bought the big ( for gun safes ) silica packs and our house is at a constant 68 degrees and very dry . ( hence maintaining the leather sheaths ) just ordered a para 3 in maxamet and grey g10 , that actually had them in stock on Amazon for 191$ !! they go for 220 to 270 $ on ebay so i jumped at it , as the last time i waited they were gone in minutes ! as well as a cold steel ad 15 ( big beefy knife with a cool lock and was able to get it for 150$ .

yeah, the little slip of paper they include in the box with their 'forever warranty' has this 'welcome to the family' clause on it: A MESSAGE FROM THE BUCK FAMILY
If this is your first Buck knife, “welcome aboard.” You are now part of a very large family. We think of each one of our users as a member of the Buck Knives family. Now that you are family, you might want to know a little more about us. The fantastic growth of Buck Knives, Inc. was no accident. From the beginning, we determined to make God the Senior Partner. In a crisis, the problem was turned over to Him, and He hasn’t failed to help us with the answer. Each knife must reflect the integrity of management. If sometimes we fail on our end, because we are human, we find it imperative to do our utmost to make it right. If any of you are troubled or perplexed and looking for answers, may we invite you to look to Him, for God loves you. aand here it is on their website: https://www.buckknives.com/about-knives/bucks-forever-warranty/

reswrightPicture a Buck-Cold Steel collab where Cold Steel shoots the video and Buck provides all the narration copy: the heroic protagonist kills the two dozen terrorist ninjas attacking him while the video's narrator says things like 'in a crisis, turn the problem over to the Holy Spirit'. I think that'd go viral :)

I keep most of mine in knife rolls with small packets of silica gel. I wipe them down when I handle them. Not much else needed. The ones that that are out (and tbh most of the ones in rolls) were chosen at least partially not to require much maintenance. Leather looks and feels best but I favor synthetics for sheathes just due to practicality, and so I end up not needing to spend much time doing things like rubbing neatsfoot oil into leather and oiling steel and stuff like that, as a result. Some is always necessary, especially anything with an old school tool or spring steel, or high carbon necker blades meant for high speed low drag applications. But if it weren’t I might do it anyway. Don’t get me wrong - buying better tools means they spend more time taking care of you than you need to spend taking care of them, and as a lazy man I am also quite happy to realize that overcare causes lots of issues like buildup of excess viscous lubricant and gummed up dust, and excessive wear on fasteners and joints as well. But minimal care...it isn’t really work, you can lose yourself in it. Moreover, it is decent mental practice. (Cleaning a well tended knife is a task much like tending a Zen rock garden in terms of effective working meditation. I think there’s a reason knives turn up in so many koans.)
