JoekenHmmmmm. Even at 2.5lbs seems on the heavy side for a tarp tent? We shall see ⛺️

TheMailman1The most comparable tent to this is probably the TarpTent StratoSpire 2 which is about 42oz (or 2.6 lbs) for the fly + inner (they spec it at 44oz inc stakes) and that still requires seam sealing which adds another ounce (the X-Mid is factory seam taped). So the X-Mid 2P will be appreciably lighter despite offering similarly generous space. Any 2P tent that is much lighter than the X-Mid 2P is a single wall, or much smaller, or made of much more expensive DCF.

dandurstonthanks dan. i have a nemo hornet 2p elite (85" x 50", tapered to 42") which comes in fully loaded @ 2.1lbs. So this is coming in slightly narrower but slightly longer as well. Is the advantage in yours more in the headroom (not dome-shaped/bump your head style), flexibility, etc.? I am psyched to jump on the excitement train for this 2p but would love to hear your perspective on the difference, especially in giving up the freestanding part.

octavecat@octavecat I'm just like you -- I use a Nemo Hornet 2P (not elite version though) for my solo or solo + 2 dog adventures. Mine is from 2017, and is 2lb for tent & fly, but no stakes. I like that the Nemo is semi-freestanding; I can attach the rear corners to an extended trekking pole to make it 100% free standing. So as much as I love my Nemo, I will say I would take the X-Mid 2p any day over the Nemo UNLESS I am somewhere where I need the smallest tent footprint possible. I set up the X-Mid in my living room and attached the head/foot end of the fly to 2"x4"x8's, so there was probably 7'8" space between attachments, and I definitely needed a 2"x4"x9'. Coming from the Nemo, the X-Mid is a palace. It's worth it to me to carry the extra 7-8oz and have it be non-freestanding. :-)

CardamomteaThank you so much for the perspective! How tall are you? I'm only 5'6 but I can see another foot of space being like a palace in the hornet.

octavecatShort short short! Lol. 5'3". But I had my 6' tall roommate lay on a 2.5" thick NeoAir and inside an EE 20 degree Revelation to get a sense of real world functionality. A lot of tents on paper look great for taller people, but the inner slopes so much that their feet or their bag touches the inner. It's hard to show in the photos, but he was able to lay in it without anything touching! Unfortunately, an extra foot on the Nemo wouldn't do anything for me, since I'm so short. The inner mesh height is what I would change -- and just more volume inside in general. But, it's a true 1p, so to be expected. The X-Mid 2p is a legit 2P, hence why it feels like a palace with just me & the dogs.

octavecatI'm not sure what the final specs will be on this (Massdrop may use a very conservative 47" for the floor width) but the floor is normally 50-51" wide for the entire length, so it will be wider than the Hornet (50" tapering to 42") and it is quite a bit longer (92" vs 85"). So the X-Mid is a more spacious tent in terms of the floor area, and also will be taller inside. The Hornet is a lighter tent because it makes a lot of compromises in functionality/durability/space to shave weight, which typically leads to a tent that isn't nearly as nice to live in - particularly in sloppy weather. For example, the Hornet has:
  • Fly that doesn't extend to the ground, so you can get rain splashing under, more drafts and condensation inside the bathtub walls and on the end wall where there is no fly. It's intermediate between a double wall and single wall tent
  • Uses nylon that sags in the rain
  • Way less vestibule space
  • Inward sloping side walls greatly reduce the living space
  • Appear to have no top vents
  • Less durable materials throughout (e.g. 10D fly vs 20D), smaller gauge zippers
So the Hornet is smaller, less featured, and less capable of managing sloppy conditions due to no vents, doors that let rain drip onto the inner tent, typically pitches with the inner tent exposed etc. For a few more ounces the X-Mid offer a much more spacious/versatile/capable tent.

dandurstonHa! That reminds me of my first night in the Hornet.. I found in the morning the head of my sleeping bag was wet, as it was touching the single wall portion of the head end of the tent. Since then I place my backpack between the end wall and my sleeping bag or quilt. Of course this only works because I'm short... wouldn't be room to do this if you're tall. I'm 5'3" and the Hornet is a very cramped tent. I use it winter camping in Minnesota, and with winter bags being so voluminous, and air pads being thicker, the bottom half of my bag touches the netting. I still love it, but there are a lot of shortcomings. Looking forward to receiving the X-Mid 1p in September to compare headroom. I have a 2007? MSR Hubba Hubba, weighs about 5lbs... I should set it up next to the X-Mid 2p sometime. The 2p feels very spacious like my Hubba Hubba, without all the weight! ...And regarding the Nemo Hornet's durability, I totally caught the damp rainfly in the zipper last time, and now have a nice little tear in the fly... have to figure out how to fix that. Edit: yes, you're correct, no vents on the Hornet.
