I would also recommend an amp. That said, I use these with a Pono Player. I bought separate cables to take advantage of using the Pono in balanced mode. This (in my view) helps the unit power the 6xx phones better and results in very nice sound, indeed!

6xx sounds like it has a flu if u don't feed it proper power. Get a powerful headphone amp like the THX 789. Go balanced all the way; use the amp's balanced Input and the balanced headphone jack.

BenSikatWhich balanced cables for the HD6XX do you recommend?

kcetjonI read fit issues with some third-party cables like FanMusic. I wanted to retain the flexibility and perfect fit of the stock Sennheiser cable so I went for this cable by CustomCans ( https://customcans.co.uk/s/s/index.php/cables/basicxlr.html ). Basically they took the stock Sennheiser cable and re-terminated the other end with a Neutrik XLR connector. If you have the skills, you can just buy a Neutrik connector and do it yourself.

Not if you have a high quality DAP. But if youre planning on using your PC or phone as your source, the answer is yes as they likely wont provide enough power. For reference, my little Cayin C5 provides plenty of juice to move these 300 ohm cans.

It is highly recommended being that these headphones have a 300ohm impedance. Without an amp, the 6XX may sound anemic, and weak. They greatly benefit and come alive with a standalone amp.

I'd say yes. If you're using them in a recording studio, any good mic/preamp box...UA Apollo, Focusright's headphone jacks will provider enough juice.

I would recommend an amp. This is a pretty high impedance headphone (300 Ohm).

It is highly recommend to drive these with an amp to get the most out of these headphones.
