RichieCunninghamThey scale well with many amps, which is why they're good, as do the hd600. Apogee groove sounds clinical and precise, bravo audio ocean and v2 add slight warmth and slightly wider sound stage. But the best for both pairs is any vintage receiver like pioneer sx690, sansui 221 and sansui au101 which is actually the runner up, not the expected winner. The pioneer is musical and clean. The sansui are both more broad sounding with awesome bass, and a loudness button, which really isn't needed. On any of the sansui amps the hd600 and hd650 sound exactly the same....fantastic!! Apparently planar headphones work very well on vintage also. All that power is put to good use. If you have the room , go vintage. Not tried marantz which I suppose is somewhere between the pioneer and the sansui, with the musicality of the pioneer and some, if not all the bass texture of the sansui.

RichieCunninghamMy top dac & amp pick for the 6xx (and most headphones) would be the atom+ stack (atom dac+ and atom amp+) because of its unbeatable price-to-performance. For more money and alternative tastes, high-impedance Sennheisers are known to love tubes. For less money, better portability, and built-in parametric eq, go with the Qudelix 5k. Honorable mentions: Soncoz LA-QXD1 - endgame DAC for $200 Modi/Magni Schiit Stack - direct alternative to atom+ stack THX AAA One - another alternative amp
