HD 58X vs HD 6XX

more_vert
Hey guys, been checking out the market for some decent open back headphones. Currently using ATH M40X's for nearly a year now. Mostly do gaming but I will listen to some music on the side or watch movies. I noticed even since I've broken in the M40X's they'll still give me that uncomfortable feeling from the clamp force that I have to take a break after about 1hr~2h. Trying to just find a good comfort fit for long hours of gaming (mostly single player) but also while providing the most entertainment when it comes to music/movies. HD 58X/6XX seem to fit that spectrum quite well so now it's all come down to choice. I don't particularly use amps, nothing against them or anything but I do hear that 6XX really require amps to take full advantage of as opposed to the 58X's. What do you guys think the best fit is for me?

I'm on the same boat as you, HD 58X vs HD 6XX. I also own the M40X, which I use at work, but looking to replace them with either the HD 58X or HD 6XX. If you don't have an amp, and don't plan to buy one in the near future, go with the HD 58X. Also, for using them with your phone or mobile device, the 58X are probably the best ones to get without needing an amp to make them sound better. The info I've gathered tells me that although there are some differences between them, the 6XX really needs an amp to shine, while the 58X are more "fun" and easier to drive with any device. So, get the HD 58X for versatility, portability, and simplicity. That's what I'll probably end up doing sometime today. Or tomorrow. Or when I make up my mind and decide! Best of luck! jo2kThanks for the feedback, I actually ultimately decided on the HD 58X after doing some extensive researching and saw some comparisons such as to the HD 600s, 650's and even the 660 S/6XX so I think it's the best bang for your buck and I hope I receive it soon. Can't wait to try it out; it'll be my first open back headphone!

Will you be using your mobo or sound card for dac/amp and are you willing to invest for external; what brand/model do you have now?

jyonaWas hoping that you had a mobo with switchable opamp(s), for a simple upgrade, that one apparently not. The 58X is a good choice to drive from a PC, and they will scale with you as you try other sound solutions. If you don't want externals plugged into your PC hanging about, and want to use that as your "center", get the Audio Note & EVGA collaboration product, the NU AUDIO sound card (DROP should drop;) and upgrade at least the headphone opamp to a MUSES02. A friend did this and loves it as his PC nexus w/o shit hanging about. He has both 58X and the 660s, the 58X stays mostly attached to the PC for music while working and gaming. An unlikely, but very serendipitous joining of forces, at a crazy low price point for what you get... "The connection between Audio Note (UK) and EVGA goes back a long way. Andrew, CEO of EVGA is a lifelong, dedicated audiophile and music lover, and when he was seeking the best system to explore his passion for the recorded arts, he of course chose Audio Note (UK). The driving forces behind the two companies have a lot in common; Andrew, Peter Qvortrup, the head of Audio Note (UK) and Andy Grove, the company’s designer in chief are all driven by the desire to make the best products possible, regardless of the development costs and challenges that may occur." https://www.dagogo.com/story-evga-nu-audio-card-engineered-audio-note-uk/ EVGA & Audio Note are trying hard to tell you, with a big green arrow, that the current opamps are "place holders" until you can upgrade...

https://www.audionote.co.uk/ You want the product of a boutique device fab, making these things for a single purpose,, music. A funny post I like, though rings true... pricey little thing... buy from a registered distributor, like Mouser, too many fakes out there... that itself speaks... most marginal/bad reviews are thought to come from folks using Chinese fakes, logical... https://www.njr.com/MUSES/
