This might have the same balanced ports and THX AAA amp as the regular M11 (from all reports, that’s no bad thing!), but the Pro has me extra interested because of the larger battery capacity. I think they also changed the DAC chip? EDIT: The standard M11 does not have a THX amp chip.

EvshrugI think you're correct. From what I understand the msrp is around 650-700 USD. I wonder what Drop could make happen on a launch date deal?

TwoBachDunno... FiiO is a value-brand already, but I think $650 could be possible. I’m going to the Rocky Mountain Audio Festival (RMAF) next weekend, it’s not a CanJam this year but hopefully FiiO will be there anyway, maybe I can try it out! Not sure if I can pack my HD 660 S, but that’s what I want to try with the FiiO (Pentaconn baby!). If I loved it, I’d have to sell some stuff to afford it, but trying out stuff often leads me to purchase 😂

TwoBachSomething I’ve been thinking about doing... picking up a FiiO M11 from Amazon, so I could compare it at home with my other DAPs (FiiO X7, Sony NW-ZX300A). Winner take all. Regular M11’s price is a little bit more digestible, but if I like the sound... I probably would wish I had the pro anyway. LOL!

EvshrugExactly my line of thinking... I watch reviews and read stuff online. Edit* I removed the video link because it wasn't useful.

TwoBachAaaaaaah Stephen... his channel Zeos Pantera (named after a computer he liked, if I recalled correctly) is definitely a passionate man. I don’t always agree with his conclusions, but I can’t argue against his passion. I find him fairly entertaining too, though sometimes his videos get quite long (and feel long). His voice doesn’t bother my ears though, hah! EDIT: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<~~ damn. 30 minute video, and by the end of it I feel like he only talked about the operational speed and standby battery life. The only thing he said about the sound quality is “it’s the most modern sounding amp,” and “the only way FiiO could get me to spend more money is for the THX Amp module for the Q5s” (missing that, in fact, the M11 is also using a THX amp design, not sure if they’re different), and a bunch of grunts and sighs. For thirty minutes. How did that review take so long? I didn’t hear him say anything about how the sound quality compared to his Pioneer and other FiiO DAPs. Watching that video made me want to go on my own rant!

TwoBachYou’re too kind. If it wasn’t for my consulting work, I’d start my own channel. I wrote often, and I sorta did start making YouTube videos 4 years ago (and publishing them 3 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4bc2SQk0h2QhBrVdL-Uxts2XvEo33oqy), but I never promoted them, and then work happened.

TwoBachI actually dont mind the long format and his quirky personality, and Zeos is very strong on product functionality and performance. I had a Astell Kern AK100 which I didn't end up using much, but the M11 functionality and use with Spotify and Tidal seem like the DAP experience is now much better!

droninI’ve actually met him in person a few times at CanJams (and the most recent RMAF), and he just seems like the kind of guy you can shoot the $#|7 with. I do the same with my buddies, but sometimes you want to get to the meat of the matter. I don’t mind that he shares his opinion, but his videos only give what he wants to give, and I often feel like there’s more exclamations than descriptions, and not enough to go on to make my own opinion. And I want to make my own opinion, because I haven’t always agreed with him in the past (for example, the HD 58X Jubilee is good, but not the same headphone as the HD 660S). Did I use enough American idioms above? Hah!

EvshrugAll good points Evshrug, I'll be heading up to New York where I can listen to some of these units. Zeos has an informed opinion but I would like really like more detail as to the specific qualities of the sound and even better in direct comparison to a competitor. Anyway I cant see where the preorder info is for the M11 pro, need to do some research but interested in this unit. was thinking astell and kern but having a better screen and UI and faster processing steers me to the m11 or m11 pro

Evshrugthanks still considering, I may try and do the prudent thing which is to go to B&H in New York and get my hands on some different daps, but functionally seems like the m11/m11 pro are the best. looking around for more m11 pro user reviews re sound signature.

droninI’ve said on this site a few times I love the full, rich sound from my FiiO X7, more than from my Sony ZX300, which sounds good with IEMs and pretty good with my HD 660S, but anything harder to drive sounds anemic and thin. I’ve read people say they were completely happy with the M11 (and it is fairly more powerful than the Sony, but less so than the X7), while others say it was a little thin. If it was thin, it would be a departure from what I’ve had before (X7, X3 mk II), but not impossible. I forget what my E5 sounded like, but sometimes my E12 sounded a little sharp... but still not anemic. I’ve read that their early amps all had slightly different signatures, so it really comes down to the design. If you happen to hear one in person, share your thoughts with something like a full-sized headphone. Do you have an HD 6XX or similar?

EvshrugOppo PM-3, might get some HD 6xx's via drop, but i see using the M11 pro out and about, lots of different headphones but probably not any that are difficult to drive. if i had such a pair would likely leave them at home. For the m11pro sound I suppose the onboard eq in the digital domain could tweak the sound signature a bit as needed.

droninPM-3 is easy to drive, M11 should be slightly overkill, haha. An EQ doesn’t compensate for an amp that is struggling to drive a headphone. It’s like a compression effect... a bit hard to explain (because I don’t have the complete science background), but I suppose the best way to relate it to engineering is that the musical passage “asks” for a certain voltage from the amp, but it can ask for more than the amp can deliver and the output hits a ceiling. In musical experience terms (audiophile snobbery, as some will see it?), something that is supposed to boom with excitement instead farts out at a more modest volume and some of the attack and impact is lost. This can happen across the entire frequency spectrum, and it might only occur dynamically (certain moments), so a persistent EQ wouldn’t solve it. If it was only happening in the midrange, maybe you could EQ down everything else around it, but then you would essentially just be listening quieter (and I’m not asking for concert levels here, I mean about 60-70 dB music listening in the home and still sometimes I’ll hear my Sony hit that “ceiling”). But again, the FiiO X7 is totally capable of doing justice with the HD 650 in my experience, and it’s not a huge A&K KANN sized brick! The Sony is significantly smaller, and has a lower max amp output to reach its 26-30 hour battery life, so it has to make some trade-offs, but it would provide plenty for the Oppo PM-3 and the M11 Pro is sized inbetween the X7 and ZX300, and it is only advertising an hour and a half more battery than the X7 (9.5 hours vs 8 hours). If you only plan on using a DAP on-the-go with sensitive portable headphones anyway, then you probably could get something in a similar form factor with longer battery life. Personally, I’m looking for a DAP to use on the plane ✈️, on my sofa 🛋, in bed, or an office away from home... and I know a DAP can do that (cuz my X7 does it pretty well), I would just like that with a faster interface and a bit longer battery runtime.
