Nice grad gift! IMO, most surround processing on a 2.0 source like music, or everything when your processor (DSP) isn’t recognized as a 7.1 device, doesn’t sound like two speakers in front of you, but rather like an effect. Sometimes processors (like Dolby headphone) try to play the left channels from the front-left, side-left, and rear-left all at the same time, but with room reverb and slight time delays which sounds weird when all mashed together. Movies are a bit better, but they almost exclusively focus on front channels, leaving rear channels to be just an occasional “special effect” rather than immersing the audience in a persistent environment. But for games, which discretely process the sound for each speaker position, I think the HD 58X Jubilee does well! Maybe not with the same “imaging” confidence of placement as an AKG K7XX or HD 800, but definitely better than a stereo speaker system. If you do get the FiiO K3 or E10, you can plug most USB DAC/amps into the PlayStation 4, and I highly recommend checking out “The Last of Us” and “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.” TLOU has built-in surround processing, so it makes the headphone Virtual 3D surround before outputting through USB, and it has some amazing sound design. Sound really helps to track Clickers off screen! Hellblade has some pre-recorded Binaural samples: the main character (and you) hear voices whispering right at your ear, sometimes moving around. It’s very cool! Hope you enjoy your HD 58X Jubilee for years to come! Remember, almost all the parts are modular, and if you don’t want to send it in for repairs, you can fairly easily replace the cables, pads, grilles, and other parts yourself.

EvshrugThank you! I've been actually asking a lot people offline and online about the FiiO K3 if they would work on a PS4, but sadly no one has really a solid answer if the K3's are supported. Only the E10 has been tested that I've known of and it works in the PS4, not even store clerks in my local Audio Store where I test high end headphones and DAC/AMPs know if the K3's are supported. They always answer with a "Probably" or "It should work", so that makes me skeptic because I'm kinds low in funds to waste money if the K3's don't work on my console. I just want an all around DAC/AMP for all my gadgets that would get me started for a few years before I need a bigger and better DAC for my set-up. And yes, I do have The Last of Us! And also yes I've seen the game of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, that game has always been on my mind as I finally got my HD58x. I've never owned the game but I've seen the reviews and gameplay, and I absolutely want to experience it for myself! Especially now with my new 58x! Because even when using my HyperX Cloud 2, w/ or w/o the 7.1 dongle, I could already feel the ASMR at the first part of the game. Right now, I'll try to get the K3 for my set-up first before anything else, just so I could maximize my audio. And thank you again! Yes, I am aware of the modularity. I've seen people do customization on different Sennheiser lines from cable changes, to custom paint jobs, and even removing the padding on the 58x just to make it more open and closer to the sound of the 660s. I personally wouldn't want to alter anything with my 58x yet, since they're the only pair I have and brand new. Maybe someday I'll try to remove the pads in the grill to experience for myself... someday.

TooStronkI should have said! I really enjoyed your write up and journal of your experience :) I could feel your excitement! I’ll tell you a secret... removing the foam between the grill and back of the driver does almost nothing. It may reflect a tiny bit of low frequencies, like maybe a decibel, but Sennheiser specifically sourced a low-density foam that’s mostly acoustically “transparent.” They mainly put it there because A.) it helped the driver survive a bit better in drop testing, and B.) they thought it looked aesthetically good to “blank” out the insides under the grill. I managed to source a pre-production HD 58X Jubilee, HD 650, and just around two weeks ago I picked up an HD 660S. The pre-production HD 58X Jubilee is sub-bass light... but it still has the foam right behind the driver (its as big as the driver), so Sennheiser changed something else to increase the sub bass. The HD 660S also has more bass than the pre-production HD 58X... and it has no foam. Some HD 660S pics:

With regards to using USB DAC/amps with the PS4... I’ve successfully used it with my FiiO E10k, Fostex HPA4, Sennheiser GSX 1000 and HDV 820, but the USB wouldn’t work with the Creative X7 (so I just used the optical input, like they recommend). It seems that the PS4 works with DACs that don’t require a driver.

TooStronkBy the way, your username makes me think of the Orks from Warhammer 40,000!

EvshrugThat's amazing! I don't know how you manage to get pre-production cans, but that's some insight! Thanks! I actually agree about the foam being aesthetically good looking, without the extra plastic grill designing the drivers as with the 660s, 6xx or the rest of the line is that it just seems dull too look at. It just got me curious with what the fuss is about removing and making it seemingly sound as the 660s, maybe I just haven't experienced it so that's why I wanna know about it first hand *haha* And about the FiiO K3, it has a optical output unlike the E10K so plugging it optical won't work with the PS4. So cross my fingers that the K3 works flawlessly with the PS4 once I save up for one.

EvshrugIt was a running joke back in the day with some of my friends always doing Russian on voice chats, and I just love how they pronounce "Strong" as "Stronk". I always play Tank or Heavy Gunner whenever we play, so I rolled with it and made it my Gamer Tag since then.

TooStronkI bought my FiiO E10k because I had picked up a nice antique DAC by a company called Theta (key members of this company left to form Schiit Audio), but the DAC only had Coax inputs. With the FiiO’s coax output, I could actually use the Theta, hah! I bet the optical out on the K3 works just the same way. i was trying to think of DAC/amp combos for you that have both USB and optical, but the only ones I could think of without doing research are fairly more expensive than the K3. I guess you always have the option to just buy an E10k... but i’m sure you have your reasons :) I always liked how my college roommate from Singapore said “gogogogo!” when playing DOTA, or “Really?” when I said something surprising. He didn’t have a strong accent, but I just liked his character! Because he had to join the military before college, he was 21 while we were all 17 and 18 years old, so he was like our cooler older brother :D

EvshrugThe reason why I'm getting the K3 is because it's an upgraded version of the E10K, and I actually have some use of the extra ports that the K3 has. Also the E10K supports 24bit while the new K3 supports 32bit which makes it worth it for years to come for me before I need or want to upgrade for a better DAC/AMP. I rarely buy stuff that cost about $100+, because I already find $40/Php2000 expensive since I still haven't started my first day at my job yet *haha* so right now, I'm just slowly grinding my allowance from my Fam until I get my first paycheck. And about your Singaporean friend, he seems he's got a bright future ahead of him since he's military! I have friends from around the world at Discord, it's amazing to learn about each other and that somehow we all are the same in a way, but with different countries and norms.

TooStronkI remember being super tight on money... I worked all through college (a sandwich cafe called Panera, work-study for the IT department, and a paid internship for graphic design), but when I graduated, the internship said “Project complete, we don’t need you anymore,” and the workstudy was over, and instead of allowance, my mom charged me rent. Not much, but after 6 months of applying (and volunteering at a radio station so I could meet people and hopefully make connections that would lead to a job), I was out of money so I started working fast food. Things got better the next summer when I started working at Apple computer, but after 4.5 years I had to quit, and a credit card bill error (paid twice) left me with only a scary $100 in my bank account last year! Fortunately, a side job I had during Apple started to kick into high gear, then higher gear, and now I’m thinking I’m not too far from a house down payment! It’s funny, but time seems to pass more quickly with less changing after College. Don’t hide the things you’re good at, put in a little extra effort to participate in the things you like, do what you have to for survival in the meanwhile, and someday you might be offered a dream job you didn’t even ask for. Good luck! 🍀

EvshrugI work in a Events Company where I do DJ, Technical Staff, Media, Client Management and sometimes Security, it was a side-job during my free time since I only had Saturday classes. It was a good and fun experience for me, and it help me with income. But downside is that they rarely call me for work(no work, no pay, or sometimes no pay at all like an intern) and it's difficult getting clients through me(clients usually jump straight to my boss). But even though its tiring and income isn't stable, it's still fun because the job is literally a party every night. Now that I've graduated, I got myself accepted at a job near my grandparent's house(convenient 15 minute ride). I'm just waiting for the agency to give me my working schedule by this week and I'll finally get started. Thank you! I've got a dream job actually at Santa Monica Studio as a Game Audio Technical Designer, but that's like walking to the top of the mountain... I've got a long way to go before I get there. But hey, it's free to dream so might as well Dream BIG.
