Admit It--You Don't Love Me Anymore!

That's not true--why would you say that? I'm crazy about you! It's just...it's just that I...forgot about you.

Now that's a terrible thing to say, especially to an old and faithful friend. But there's some truth to it--in all the excitement and distraction of daily life (the "big grind" as it were), I just hadn't thought much about my good old Seiko SNZH57. I don't know why--it's a good looking watch, loosely based on the famous Blancpain Fifty Fathoms--and modable to look nearly identical to one if that's your goal. It's a practical watch too; automatic movement and while not a true diver, it does offer 100M water resistance, and a unidirectional bezel. It comes on a decent 20mm stainless bracelet with a fold-over safety clasp and that crystal is actually slightly domed. So what's the problem? Okay--truthfully my only issue with this watch is that 7S36B movement--the damn thing doesn't wind and hack! If it wasn't for that--I'd put this otherwise very nice watch, much higher in my daily rotation schedule. I don't want to sound like an elitist watch-snob-guy, but over the years, hacking, as a feature of any given watch movement, has become a bit of a dividing line for me. I don't mind winding a watch, but having to wear it (or stick it in a winder overnight) just to keep it running, seems too damn inconvenient these days. Certainly that issue (older movements) was a big part of Seikos recent revamp of the entire "5" line of entry-level watches. While I have mixed emotions about that change, one of the most noticeable omissions to the new line is a replacement or upgrade for this specific model--a major fuck-up in my opinion, because a SNZH57 with an NH35A movement would be a big, big hit in my book. Who knows--maybe one day I'll mod mine with an upgraded movement, or maybe Seiko will realize the error of their ways and upgrade the damn things for us!

AlexPkYou mean that little insect infestation we seem to be dealing with of late?

I began by inviting them to leave, but when they didn't take the hint, I put on my ORKIN MAN uniform and started squishing them like the little cockroaches they are.

Evidently they've taken offense? Who knew bugs have feelings? Anyway, I think it's time we hire a few more fumigators, the Writing Community seems to have been overrun as well.

My 1st Gen Orient Mako's complaints against me are very similar! When my collection was limited, I was wearing it quite a bit. But as soon as there were other hacking/hand-winding watches in the rotation, the Mako was sadly forgotten. I love the look of the SNZH57. Seiko 5 should bring the SNZH57 with the 4R movement.

I agree 100% with you. I used to have the same version of watch (black & gold) and sold it due to non-winding werk. When I see your pics I remember now why I liked this piece: small, comfy watch, bit understated yet with some spark in it. Imho looks much better than the new 5 family. Here's a crazy thought: maybe I'll buy it again and mod it by myself?? I mean you gotta learn someday, right? What's better than a cheap Seiko to do the first steps? I won't use my swiss watches for that...🤔🛠⚙
