Apparently, I have new "interests"

more_vert
For as long as I've been on (Mass)Drop, I've only ever had the "Blades" section in my profile as an interest. I believe it might have been called something else before that, but the point is that knives and only knives are what I've wanted emails about. Knives are why I discovered the site in the first place, knives are the only type of expensive toy I collect, and knives are the only thing I've ever actually purchased from this site. No wait, scratch that--I bought a wool scarf because it was made with the tartan plaid of the Gordon clan, to which my ancestors belonged; I'd been on the lookout for a long time for something in Gordon plaid, so that scarf was a nice find, even for the fairly high price of 80 bucks. My point is that I'm not at all pleased to see knives now a part of the "everyday carry" section of interests. For one thing, that section was already large (and poorly-defined) enough; moreover, within the category of "everyday carry" are a whole lot of products I don't have the slightest interest in. No offense to anyone who compulsively buys flashlights and/or Zippo lighters, but I already have a Zippo that's personalized and full of sentimental value, and I don't want any others; and flashlights to me are just tools to be used, not objects of art to be collected (which is probably how you flashlight collectors see knive). I already own three or four flashlights that cover all my low-light situational needs, and until those stop working, I have no plans to buy any more.6 Again, no disrespect intended to the fans of Zippos, $100 pry-bar/bottle openers, multi tools, flashlights (although, I have to say, I saw a "custom pocket clip" for a flashlight from some big name in flashlights being sold the other day for $250, and thought that was pretty excessive--even the fanciest of knife pocket clips don't exceed $100), or any other "EDC" item one might wish to buy and/or collect. To each their own. But my in-box already receives more useless emails than useful ones, and with this change I'm pretty certain my eyes are going to start skipping over drop.com emails the same way they do when I get one from Amazon, or Jiffy Lube, or Petsmart, etc.

I don't really care what the title of the place is, so long as it isn't ignorant. But I gotta say 'EDC' wouldn't have been my choice. It's a term we all use, but i like the stuff more than how it's marketed. The marketing is: whatever you have, you are meant to want something more. The guy with a thousand dollar phone that worries he needs an eleven hundred dollar one, the dude with an XM-18 that fantasizes about how cool it would be to have a Norseman instead. And once they've got the eleven hundred dollar phone and the Norseman, they'll want something else. The guy that buys the BMW 328i loves his car until he sees the M5 blow by him. The CEO in it might have a twelve thousand dollar custom knife made out of meteorites and REX 121 and his five thousand dollar phone might pair up with a sixteen thousand dollar Sonos bluetooth speaker, but he's not done wanting something better than all that, either. There's no value judgment in saying or understanding that this is how it works -- at least, not from me. I think we're all kinda this way at heart. And it's definitely not meant to cast shade on people who carry around a bunch of stuff that they actually use, and that's why they carry it around. Thing is, I'm willing to bet they know exactly what I mean. I kinda wish it was just Knives in its own community separate from the other stuff, too, but if this is what it takes for Drop to start curating buys better and updating ad copy more often, I'll deal.

I have to be honest for about 10 minutes I was totally lost when I couldn't find Blades under my Intrest. When I finally realized Drop had stuck Knives in with EDC I felt about as good as the day I discovered there fancy new format.😩😝 I'm sure there's valid reasons for these decisions that haven’t even occurred to me. However until someone in the know comes out and explains it to us were all just left to speculate. I believe this to be one of Drops worst mistakes that's made over and over again in my areas. Hopefully it gets fixed in time.

What the heck, DROP at every turn makes the wrong marketing decisions. First, to change their name and now compete with the entire world and give up on their original business plan and now to alienate probably their largest buyer group. the knife buyers. You are correct I have no interest in sifting through flashlights to look at knives. I suspect they did this because they have so few knife offerings now that it was starting to look pathetic.

Spokes30That was literally the visual and literary representation of someone falling asleep in the middle of typing a sentence. It was going to say that I agreed 100% that Drop seems to willfully choose the wrong marketing decisions. Like they have some kind of Bizarro World marketing--totally inverted. It would be fascinating if it wasn't so frustrating, and it's doubly so thinking about how much $ they leave on the table because of it. I get that there are multiple perspectives, broader company goals, etc.; I get that I cant assume organizing all the company and its sales strategy to suit my whims. But even with that in mind, it's very hard to see how many of their moves could possibly be the best strategies. Take for example something Ive harped on way too too many times (but will keep at it until we see some strong positive action), the issue of photos of knives Breifly: there aren't enough, and there should be more because they would help sales, and cost next to nothing. Just doesn't make any damm sense.

Agreed (not to mention, after the rebranding I started getting email ads again after I had turned them off before) I'm not sure why they can't use tags on the products, and allow us to search and subscribe based on tags rather than communities Like : Item A - titanium pocket knife Community - EDC Tags - EDC, Blades, titanium, m390 Item B - titanium flashlight Community - EDC Tags - EDC, Flashlight, Titanium, LED Item C - wood carving chisels Community - EDC Tags - EDC (i disagree, but it's there right now lol), Blades, Tools, Woodworking Item D - titanium camping pots Community - Outdoor Tags - Outdoor, camping, cooking, titanium Person 1 subscribes to Knives, sees only emails for Item A Person 2 subscribes to EDC, sees all items in the EDC community Person 3 loves all things titanium, subscribes to the titanium tag, gets alerts on items A, B, and D... Even though they're in different communities. Seems like a simple fix that would make for more accurate targeted advertising, happier customers, and solve some issues with crossposting and the current community restructuring
