I'm limited at work to the hot water dispenser from our office coffee machine. Is there any way to make up for the lack of temperature variability?

arazizaIf you get a thermometer, you could titrate some cold water into that hot water to get it cooler if you want, another option is to buy a cheap electric kettle, I know a few people at my office keep them on their desks for tea and such.

arazizaAre you using that water for a different brew method or just in the machine brewing? If you're just using the machine there isn't much to do, but if you are using that water to do pour over or some other brew method on your own then you have some flexibility. The first thing you want to do is find out what the temperature is. If you need it hotter you can always pop a mug in the microwave if you have one available. If it's too hot, that's easier to handle since you can just experiment with letting it sit for a set amount of time and watching how the temperature drops until it gets to the ideal temp for the brew you're aiming for.

arazizaHow much does it vary? Have you actually measured with a thermometer? You can wait for it to cool if needed, add cold water, etc but you'll need a thermometer at the office to compensate.

arazizaIn college long ago, we used to heat water in a cup using a little electric heating element loop. You plugged it in, then just dip in it the cup until it boiled, or gets to the temp you want. Like this norpro immersion heater. You can find these for a couple bucks in supermarkets. http://tinyurl.com/y89tdsdb
