Jaycooks@Smokiebear8 This.
There are brands that sell cleaner but it really isn't worth it UNLESS the instructions for the machine explicitly state to use a certain product (usually end-game ones will often recommend/require specific products).

Smokiebear8Run a diluted vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) through the machine. Follow this with running clean water through one or two times.
Other than that, clean the filter basket and pot after each use.

Smokiebear8You clean them? I thought the build up was part of the break-in process.

Smokiebear8I use Urnex descaler in my drip machines as well as both of my espresso machines (La Valentina semi-automatic and Expobar Office Lever Plus). Most people use diluted white vinegar. What you are looking for is an acidic medium to cut through the lime and mineral scale in the tank that can build up. This causes blocking of flow, and adverse taste in the end product. For a regular drip machine, equal parts vinegar and water. The only reason I buy descaler is because opening up and replacing parts in an espresso machine is... not fun.

datilderekCoffee oils can go rancid so you should clean your machine. It's unlikely you'd catch anything horrible from it, but it definitely can taste nasty.

Smokiebear8I highly recommend following the manufacturer recommendations for cleaning and maintenance. Vinegar can erode aluminum piping in machines, plus leave funky odors behind. While the commercial cleaners are more expensive, many are formulated to clean effectively without harming machine parts.
