5 Things to Consider When Building a Deck With Fires of Invention
Fires of Invention is the card that struck me as the most powerful card in Throne of Eldraine during the spoiler season. When it works you can be ahead by so much mana. But the difficult part about this card is deciding which other 56 cards to play. In this Standard format, I have almost exclusively been playing decks with Fires of Invention. Here are 5 things that you should consider when building a deck with Fires of Invention.
1. Which colors to play
The main versions of Fires of Invention that I have tried out so far are Jeskai and Temur. Jeskai lists usually play a lot of planeswalkers like Teferi and Narset and and is able to get value in the early game using them. I have found planeswalkers aren’t at their best in a Fires strategy because of the limited amount of spells you can play to protect them, but I think they are some of the better options out there for Fires. Teferi is just a really good card and the cheap planeswalkers are good to cast...
8: Redcap Melee
Redcap Melee is part of the cycle of self-hate cards, and is like a Chandra’s Defeat that you’re technically allowed to maindeck. Typically the appeal of cheap cards is that you can play them in the early turns, but if you’re not playing against a red deck then casting this early is asking for trouble. For this reason I suspect there won’t be a lot of maindeck Melees, but the card is a slam-dunk sideboard card. Unfortunately planeswalkers have a billion loyalty these days, enough to survive a Melee, which makes it a fair bit worse than Chandra’s Defeat, but utility is utility. When the hate cards are this efficient, you can bet they’ll definitely see play.
This one is a bit of a longer shot. I’m not entirely sure this will end up being good, but it is a lot of damage for potentially not that much mana. Double-strike and trample as a combat trick means your opponent is in for a world of hurt if you put this on, say, a...
The bannings of Hogaak and Faithless Looting and the unbanning of Stoneforge Mystic surprised the Magic community when it was first announced. Many Modern decks were built off of Faithless Looting and many decks such as Phoenix and Hogaak were knocked out of the format entirely. I am going to talk about the biggest changes the Banned and Restricted Announcement did to the Modern format.
Burn is the most played deck right now.
This isn’t that surprising at the beginning of a format. It was the top deck after the introduction of Modern Horizons, too. Burn is the kind of deck that gets better the more clunky the opposing deck is. If an opponent takes a lot of damage off of their lands, Burn will punish them for it. It will likely stay as the top deck until the other decks (such as the Stoneforge Mystic decks) can be tuned to beat it. The fact that Burn has such a linear strategy that doesn’t care about many of the things that a lot of the decks are doing makes it a solid...
Dante: Please introduce a new circle of hell for web designers!
Do modern web designers do ANY usability testing? Today I received an email "It's not bragging if it's true" soliciting pictures of a recent purchase (Planck Mechanical Keyboard Kit V6). This leads to a "pictures" section of the product page which surprisingly was empty. So I uploaded a couple of pictures. It prompted me to type a caption which I did. The pictures are published without the caption (even when clicked on to view full size) and with a procrustic truncation over which I get no control (that I can find). This is pointless and makes me look stupid, so I want to delete them, but I cannot find any way to do that either!
I just came by and had to see that there is no longer a cooking, quilting and knitting community available. Most of the other stuff is of little interest for me, so don't expect that I will stay if they stay cancelled.
I seem to be getting a lot of clearance emails from Drop recently and now that they're actually selling many of their high end headphones at reduced prices along with emails saying that there are no future plans to restock (see https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/dpdjtb/psa_fostex_trx00s_on_dropcom_sorta_eol/)
Either they are planning some relaunch of their headphones (which I hope is the case) or they are clearing out stock in preparation for some liquidation. I see that their daily offerings have become stale and their removal of the different communities didn't really bode well for the company.
This has been brewing for some time. I think I've finally reached the end with Drop.
Yes there is the occasional "good" deal that's worth considering, but these are becoming far too sparse and fleeting. And then there is the common issue of incomplete or even totally inaccurate information in the descriptions, wrong pictures, or basic pictures missing (like full shots of the rear of an audio component... duh!). And even when pointed out, no change ever seems to be made, as evidenced by drops that have been running for multiple years and still contain issues commented on the first time around.
What broke this camel's back? The great (sic) deals available in the first ever Drop Warehouse "Sale." First item I checked, the Kyocera 12oz Travel Mug for nearly $30 shipped... which I believe is even more than when it originally dropped (pretty sure there was free shipping). Like I did before, I'll instead order another from Amazon for just $20.
For me, it has simply become a waste of...
