Definitely not an amp. The output of a DAC is more than enough to drive this at a high volume, now your only concern should be how much high quality of a DAC you want.

I have tried it with a dedicated DAC/AMP, direct connect to computer audio and with a SANSA Clip. All combinations worked fine. I have not tried and A-B comparisons as it is normally on the dedicated DAC.

You don't need a DAC unless want to bypass the one in the device you're playing music on (tablet, cellphone, computer). As for an amp, that is subjective. It depends on your source, how loud you want to be able to listen and how much you care about sound quality. These are half the impedance of the HD600 so they're easier to drive. I can get good volume directly from an iPod Shuffle but the sound quality is somewhat compromised but still quite good. They sound great directly from the headphone jack on my CD player but sound even better through a good headphone amp as expected. For me, I can use these happily without a separate headphone amp but since I have some decent headphone amps (TEAC HA-501 & JDS Atom), I use them when I want just a little more.

It is not compulsory, but to get the most out of it, my suggestion would be to get a decent DAC/Amp for this. The impedance of the headphones is 150 ohms which is a lot and although you might be able to play it out of the phone or laptop, you won't be able to push the HD 58X upto its full potential, as you would with a proper DAC/Amp combo. My suggestion would be to get a reasonably cheap amp like the Massdrop O2 Amp or the Schitt Magni 3 Amp paired with the Schitt Modi 3 (DAC) as starters. Or just get one of the amps I mentioned above to get yourselves started with these headphones.

most headphones, specially audiophile-tagged headphones, benefit from using amps/dacs, but in this case you don't need an amp to use these, it's not that power hungry to make them unusable without an amp or dac, i plug them most of the time directly to my laptop and they work fine

It is not required but in order to get the peak performance with then it is recommended.

Should I exchange the PC38X for better headphones?
I bought the PC38X headphones FOR GAMING and they are great, but I have NO use for a Microphone since I don't do competitive gaming and I was wondering if there were better headphone options at a similar price without a headphone, where (presumably) more of the cost was put into making it sound better. Looking for a gaming/content audio setup
Hello! I'm looking for recommendations on audio setups. I'd be planning on using it mostly for gaming. Preferably I'd like a pair of large closed back headphones since I have a big head and jaw. I'd also like to hear myself through my mic with mic monitoring. As far as budget goes, I don't really have one. But under 600$ would be nice. I can go higher if needed. Hello, I just joined, primarily for the audiophile products. Looking at purchasing the NHT C3 speakers for our new living room. Space is about 15 feet wide by 33 long and they will fire long ways. Space is just for general listening, music room with all equipment is downstairs, so hoping they will fill it with sound nicely. Cheers.
