What does it mean that these are open back?

The other side of the open back design is that as the sound making element moves backwards and forwards to produce the sound waves going into your ear, it also pushes sound waves out of the back of the headphones which can be heard by those around you. Accordingly open back headphones are not really suitable for use in an environment that is shared by people that don't want to listen to the music that you may be enjoying.

It means that there is free flow of air between the ears and the room. There isn’t a solid shell to block outside noise. Because of this, there is almost no reverberation, and most say they sound better.
