Another use for Dekoni foam tips.

After cutting out the core, the foam tips work great to help fully seal CIEMs. The Dekoni foam is very slow to rebound, which is beneficial for this use.

This looks a bit odd... My understanding of CIEMs is that they're molded to fit your ear. Is this foam just to help them stay in, or create a seal? Or was there a mistake with the production?

That is an interesting mod, for sure, and as we might physiologically change over time, could certainly be useful.

Necessity prompted it. I’ve had more success with UIEMs than CIEMs. With rigid acrylic CIEMs (I’ve never tried silicone CIEMs), when I open my mouth or smile, it breaks the seal on the right, and my ear canal is finicky on the left. I’ve been making do with applying some dental wax, but that can be a pain, and is still not great. Now, with the foam rings, the seal is perfect, and talking/smiling doesn’t change the seal at all. In general, I haven’t liked foam tips due to having to hold the IEM for a while, while it seals. With the CIEMs, you just put them in, and they stay in the correct position, then the foam just gradually expands.

I believe we are both saying precisely the same thing. At least, what you said was my intended translation, with the physiological change part. Yes, our ears are constantly changing, as do the rest of us, and that is precisely the biggest reason I have never purchased any CIEM. Get around the holidays put on a few pounds, beginning of the year drop a few, etc... I could easily see them getting tighter and looser over time, for sure. That was thinking outside of the box you did there, and the most important thing, it works precisely as intended.
