What are the best way(s) to transport knives? For example bringing a few to a friend's house to help prep.

ColbraDumb question probably, but do I just put my knives in this, or should I use edge guards too?

bchu23I'd recommend knife guards before a bag to be honest. I've cut myself a couple times on one knife while taking another out of my bag when I wasn't smart enough to buy a guard at the same time as the knife.
Also if you're only taking one or two knives, you can easily carry them with just the guards on without a bag (though the bag does let you carry more knives at once and may be a bit safer since the knives are in an extra thing)

BirdofPreyThanks! Any recommendations? Should I be concerned that the cheaper plastic options could stain or scratch the blade?

bchu23I don't really know. a Aside from the couple knives I have that sold with guards specifically for that knife, all I've ever used are the cheap, black plastic ones Messermeister sells. Never had any damage to the knife, though I have cracked a couple guards from shoving the bolster into them too many times (wedges split things, who knew)

BirdofPreyThe Messermeisters are great, just make sure your knives are clean when putting them in a guard. I love having a knife roll because the covers can slip off if you're jostling around too much, rolls don't usually have that problem.
Some knives also have specifically built sheaths, but I find the higher up in quality you go with your knife, the less likely the company will have a form fitted sheath for it.

bchu23Invest in a knife roll or some sturdy sheaths for your knives. Nothing worse than poking through a nice bag with the tip of an unprotected knife! In a pinch you can wrap kitchen towels around the blades, but be super careful!

bchu23Visit a local restaurant supply house, pick up some Dexter knife sheaths. Usually $5 to $6 each.
You can get an inexpensive knife roll too, if you want one.

bchu23I might be biased in this... But I hate single-use items, especially when they are rarely used. It isn't just about wasting money on them - it is about storage as well. You don't know how many things have made it to the goodwill pile after a few years of being unused. That being said, my comment here is going to be controversial compared to most below.
I have only had this situation occur about a half dozen times, so there really isn't a need to have a specialized tool for the job. A simple kitchen towel will do. Just spread them out so no knife touches another and roll them up. There is an extremely unlikely occurrence that you would need more than 3 knives, so this method works 100% of the time for me. Just don't be dumb and damage the tips.

cs85b03Agree with this for sure. I am a VERY amateur, VERY professional chef. so if I am cooking for a group, 99% of the time it is in my own kitchen. If it's not I take two dish towels and roll up the 4-5 tools I know I will need. Do they have knifes where I'm going? Yeah, but they are probably garbage so I will bring mine, plus a peeler and microplane. Unless you are a full time chef, no need to get a bag

bchu23Knife roll I like Boldric, but almost every company (mercer, victorinox, shun, etc) makes one. Ultimate edge is really popular amongst professionals, too Mise has some nce ones but they are priced past the point of diminishing returns.

Buy those plastic blade covers and you're good to go. As "best value" for a home cook, I'd recommend Messermeister brand Victoinox makes GREAT "blade safes" for each knife. A little higher priced, but really nice. I DO think it's worth the few extra dollars to get a "blade safe" vs just the sleeves
