Copper Skyline

more_vert
You can't buy it in stores but you can make your own. 1) Get 1 Skyline with G-10 and 1 set of copper scales for it. These are from Flytanium. The Skyline's the one I bought from Drop.
search
2) Break it down. The pivot is T8 and the fasteners on the clip and spine are T6. Don't miss the fact that two fastener bolts are embedded in the thin G10 scale that you need to pop out and then set into the thin copper scale, so the long T6 fasteners running through the spine and backspacer have some steel threads to bite into on the other side. Be aware that these can be tricky to pop out. They're easier to 'rip' out by taking a pair of needlenose pliers and ripping away nearby G10 which of course ruins the old scale, but it won't be usable without the bolts anyway. Aside from that it's a simple breakdown that I believe I've documented elsewhere on this site already: you're just disconnecting Torx fasteners and the pivot and it all pops apart after that. Here it is all broken down with the copper scales ready to go back on.

3) Put it back together again. Optional: give it a lanyard.

I'd say it's a little more difficult than the RAT-1 rebuild, simply because of the bolts you have to retrieve from the old scale. But aside from that it's pretty doable for most folks.

I used a snake knot and a copper Anubis bead I've been meaning to put on a knife for a while now.

You know, I'd rather have this than the copper Natrix. I like that ok and all but this just feels a little nicer in the hand. The copper gives it heft but not too bad: 5 1/2 oz, or 155 grams, some small portion of which is the lanyard and bead.

There you can see the bolts with the screws threaded through them. A little tricky but not too bad. There you are, Drop. The Copper Skyline.

Dog the bead. ESP with copper. I can never bring myself to use beads on Ti, with all the snail trailing and knicks you get from banging around — but on brass or copper, now we’re talking.

Jonduncan316I know you meant 'dig the bead' but 'dog the bead' is a pretty good play on words.

flytanium makes the best gear hands-down. I love his work. I have a few scales made by him but I need more. Period. On to the next set.
