Recommend AMP / DAC for the HD 6XX?

more_vert
I have USB DAC-UP 2 (with Adjustable Voltage) already on my motherboard, have been eyeing the Schiit Modi / Magni 3+ (or the Magni Hersy) combo. Not sure which is better (the Magni 3+ or the Magni Hersy?) I looked at the Fulla 2 but have been reading it'll work but would not provide enough power to let the HD 6XX's shine.
  • With my USB DAC on my motherboard, do I even need a DAC?
  • How would I even connect my USB DAC to my amp?
  • What's better the Magni 3+ OR the Magni Hersy?
New to this, I am doing research but there's so much info.

The Heresy is better per measurements, but the differences are possibly inaudible. The biggest issue is channel imbalance, which makes me personally recommend the JDS Labs Atom. The Heresy/Magni 3+ are built better, but until the volume control is fixed it's hard to recommend them. As for the DAC, you connect it to your amp via RCA cables. It's easy and straight forward. It's even color coded! The DAC-UP isn't actually a DAC itself to my knowledge, but a port for clean USB DAC connection. You can hook up your motherboard audio jack output to the amp (using a connector like this: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-3-5mm-2-Male-Adapter-Stereo/dp/B01D5H8KO2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=1%2F8+to+rca&qid=1576517695&sprefix=1%2F8+to+&sr=8-3), but I wouldn't recommend that since they are typically noisy. A decent USB DAC will do the job just fine. Another option is something like the Topping DX3 Pro, which is an all-in-one unit that's about the same as the Schiit DAC/amp combo but potentially easier to use.
