Whats the pros and cons of gain switch? Is there a downside of setting the gain at high all the time?

Yes you can roast your ears and headphones. A gain switch is used to modify the input power of your source to give you maximum use of the volume dial with your headphone of choice. Use the gain that allows you to listen between 8 and 2 on the volume dial (like a clock). If you have a low output source (some mobo's and most phones) high gain may be needed. The lowest gain actually reduces the max relative to the original input to work with very sensitive low impedance headphones.
