Up until the THX 789 all my head phone amps have been all DIY and all had proved to be very good value for sound dollars builds. I bought the 789 because of its reputation and I wanted to find out how a good budget retail design compared to DIY. At first it seemed a bit dry with a slightly rough edge. Over time, it's been over a month now, that edge really just seems to add more of a bite to the sound than anything and the dryness is now a none issue. My most enjoyable aspect of the 789 is its sound stage and dynamic sound, both in micro dynamic sense and the whole dynamic sound picture. High resolution is obvious right down into the rock base guitar frequencies. The tone of the 789 does remind me a lot of an O2 though. Although the O2 doesn't have the wide sound stage or resolution. But its not that far behind and the O2 does seem to sound a fair bit smoother. There are times I have to admit when I forget which one I'm listening to. So is this the best headphone amp at any reasonable price? Of course I haven't heard everything that's available, but the 789 is defiantly one for the HPA shortlist. End game? Perhaps not for the serious high end audiophile. I think you would still need to save up some serious money to enjoy a true end game Headphone amp.
