I hereby bring to your attention another possible "low budget" alternative to HD820 (in addition to my earlier suggestion: Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro @250 ohms + Asgard 3):
Austrian Audio (run by former AKG technicians and management) will soon release the (closed back) Hi-X 55. I haven't heard it yet, but it looks promising. It's about the same price as an HD600 In Europe, and @25 ohms easy to power.

Merv73Ah, but is it an easy to power 25 Ω, or is it an AKG low Ω and medium sensitivity where the headphone benefits greatly from a good supply of current?
I doubt it would be as amp-hungry as the Fostex TH-X0 line, and I have happily owned AKG headphones for years. Good to hear “they” are continuing on as Austrian Audio, would be great if they were able to come or send demo units to a Can-Jam in the USA.

EvshrugSensitivity is 118 dB spl/V. Watt = Volt squared / Ohms = 1*1/25 = 0.04 watt. So you would need just 40 mW to get to ear-damaging 118 dB spl. My guess would be an average smartphone would be able to drive it to normal to moderately loud listening levels without a problem. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating...

Merv73Right, cuz we don’t know if it has a linear impedance curve... though I think the K712 Pro and some of the other AKGs did?
Don’t hate please, but I have an iPhone with the lightning dongle. I have other options to drive my headphones, but do you happen to know the output impedence on the Lightning dongle? Is it 10 Ω like the old iPhones and iPods?

Merv73I used to work at Apple, but I don’t have any contacts who would know that info 😅 I probably should have just googled it... there are websites devoted to measuring impedence (output and input), and ironically they often don’t trust each other’s results.
Regardless! The Austrian Audio Headphone should probably sound great! And I get the impression that most audio enthusiasts who choose a phone with a headphone jack will probably gravitate towards an LG phone, and others (like me) are using a player or DAC/amp instead of our phones.
its funny... I don’t find new smartphones all that compelling these days (other than computational camera features and gaming performance). Others may disagree here, and be excited by the 25% or 100% improvements in compute or graphics power. But I’d rather “complete” my digital ecosystem at this point, buying a smartwatch, thermostats and lights (the lights have been nice energy savers, though I just got another that I think will be great for urban gardening!), have an tablet that can replace a laptop, get a cool music player to separate me from everything “phone” (unless I want to stream), etc.

Looking for a gaming/content audio setup
Hello! I'm looking for recommendations on audio setups. I'd be planning on using it mostly for gaming. Preferably I'd like a pair of large closed back headphones since I have a big head and jaw. I'd also like to hear myself through my mic with mic monitoring. As far as budget goes, I don't really have one. But under 600$ would be nice. I can go higher if needed. The audio setup would be connected to a high performance PC. Thank you in advance for any recommendations!

Trying to buy some gear off Drop for the first time. I was told I would receive an email with a welcome to drop $10 off promo. I never received that email. Drop was able to send me emails for my login token and email for Password update. But for some reason the $10 off coupon was never sent to me.

What would be a good portable Dac/Amp to use with my HD6xx and Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone?
I am new to this hobby. I purchased a HD6XX and plan to use it with my Sony Xperia 1 V cell phone, that has a 3.5mm jack. Invest in Balancing my HD6xx headphones?
Hi... I'm a songwriter/producer. I have Drop Senn HD6xx HPs. I just bought a Topping L30 II SE HP amp to enhance my monitoring. It honestly sounds pretty good. The audio interface I'm using (an Audient iD22) has balanced outs. For those of you who've listened to the HD6xx using balanced amps and cables, do you think I should invest in that kind of setup to take advantage of the Senns potential?

Should I exchange the PC38X for better headphones?
I bought the PC38X headphones FOR GAMING and they are great, but I have NO use for a Microphone since I don't do competitive gaming and I was wondering if there were better headphone options at a similar price without a headphone, where (presumably) more of the cost was put into making it sound better. I also find that my PC38X don't get quite as loud as I would like and I was wondering if a cheap amp like the iFi Go link would draw a little more volume out of my phones. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BN6MM822?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details I went with the PC38X since it was considered the best bang for buck headphones. Hello, I just joined, primarily for the audiophile products. Looking at purchasing the NHT C3 speakers for our new living room. Space is about 15 feet wide by 33 long and they will fire long ways. Space is just for general listening, music room with all equipment is downstairs, so hoping they will fill it with sound nicely. Cheers.
