reswrightI used a lab rotary instrument that is similar to Dremel tool. Started with stone wheels and finished with various grit silicone wheels.

zanypoetThat's what I'm talking about! Freehand grinding. I've only done blade alteration with a Dremel twice. Did up a set of practice knives for myself and my bro, who also works with trainers in his Arnis training. Cut in some jimping. Planned to do mine first and learn in the process, i.e. get the mistakes out of the way on mine, so as to not mar his up. Ended up being a wise plan -- as possibly happened to you when you were first learning the process, I found the rotary grinder head had a mind, if I weren't very careful, to skitter off the spine at random intervals and spark its way down the flat. Fixing that can be rather hard. There's a learning curve with Dremel type tools, and a lot of it's muscle memory, with the occasional materials science lesson tossed in, like the swift acquisition of a healthy respect for the destructive power of steel filings.
