And we're live! bit.ly/tokyo60

Hey everyone, I'm super excited to finally introduce the tokyo60 formally here on Massdrop!
This design has been in the works for over a year, with countless revisions and prototypes to get to the most minimal design possible. Now we'll be collaborating with MD to finally bring this project to life.
There's no official drop date yet other than soon™ (@yanbo) but I'm hoping this can start the ball rolling - let me know what you guys think!

A minimal HHKB style mechanical keyboard.
Full aluminum hi-pro construction with integrated top-plate. Cherry MX compatible with custom PCB. Fits most standard 60% PCBs.
Fixed layout. Optimized design.
Instead of creating a product that supports countless options, colors, or layouts. We wanted to focus on one design, one layout, and a small handful of colors and make that the best it can be without compromise. Everything from the feel of the plate to the sound of bottoming out has been crafted and considered.
  • Fixed Layout: ANSI HHKB Winkeyless 60-key with split backspace and right shift. There are no current plans to support ISO or JIS layouts.
  • Two Piece Construction: high profile 6-series aluminum top with integrated top-mount plate, and a matching aluminum bottom.
  • Small footprint high-profile design: 5 degree angle with a gentle chamfered bezel.
  • Travel friendly: The Tokyo60 comes in under at under 1kg giving it just the right weight to feel premium, but not to heavy to take with you to class or the cafe.
  • No-solder setup: hot swap PCB running QMK and featuring Kaihua's new hot swap sockets.

I'm more interested in that beef curry that isn't sold in 7/11 near me...because I live on the other side of "the wall" aka U.S. :( Bad jokes aside, I may go for this one over the ALT that's currently active...depends on the price difference. I honestly feel that I've made a not so-ok purchase by buying a keyboard with no hot-swappable switches; many products like this one compete with it in price and offer the feature although they didn't offer the shifted backspace. Now you guys show up. ps: Can never go back to the default backspace placement...I now look specifically for this kind of setup. Just do me the favor of offering an all black option and I'll convince myself to buy it.

Here's a question I've been wondering for a while, but haven't really had a chance to ask- Why the reduced functionality of the WKL bottom row layout? If the board is programmable and you dont use the WK, you can assign a different function there anyway. I just don't understand the justification behind paying a premium for fewer keys when you have the option for the standard amount.

LevelSteamI think you might get different answers from different people, because I suspect there are a variety of reasons why someone might prefer this layout over another. Some might say the "Windows key" is redundant, as other key combos can do the same functionality. Some might argue that fewer keys can lead to faster work as your fingers have less of an area to cover. Some just may prefer the visual aesthetic. Personally, I was attracted to this layout for retro nostalgic reasons.

However, I think when it comes to your point of "paying a premium," the number of keys is not the sole criteria here. If Logitech were making keyboards in this layout, I'm sure they could have $30 keyboards on the shelves. But, at least as is the case is here with the Tokyo60, we're talking about a machined aluminum body and fully customizable hot swap pcb. If you wanted a larger sized keyboard in this same quality, of course you're going to pay more for it too. The keyboard and pcb by itself with no caps or switches was $175. That's pretty inexpensive compared to other custom aluminum keyboard kits I've gotten through Geekhack group buys, and none of those kits have hot swap pcbs. (Though they have been 60% boards or larger.) I'll be honest with you, I wasn't sure if I'd like the small layout when I first got it - after using full sized keyboards for so long. But after some time, I've found that I really enjoy using it. Getting just the right switches and keycaps go a long way in that user experience, but the part that surprised me most was just how comfortable and natural certain keyboard shortcut combos become after awhile. And it helps a lot that you can be the person to define what they are and how they work.

StariusAll good points. I suppose Im just partial to having my win key since I use the combos for increased functionality and disable it when I play games. It's probably also unfair for me to say you're paying a premium for less, given how many expensive custom 60% boards I already own. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I realize that I have no idea why I wrote this comment the other day.

Any update on a drop date @tokyocoffeenerd? There are a few other GBs happening soon, just trying to budget appropriately.
1.5mm! Integrated and solid and better over all than the 4.5mm prototype we made :)
