Anyone interested in reviving the Nofan CR-95c passive CPU cooler?
more_vert
The product was discontinued due to the niche market of passive coolers for TDP 95W CPUs. Maybe together we can get it!

It died because it didnt fit in a lot of cases and blocked the first pci-e slot.

I just noticed that ~ a year ago, Paul's Hardware made a video with a 3rd gen Ryzen and this cooler: https://youtu.be/rWqs0S-Djfg

Yeah, there's a treatment you can apply to copper/brass to make it turn almost a very dark purple, and it looks incredible. I'd like to see that on this. You can see the effect here: https://youtu.be/yp7B-WRDoVw?t=776

Damn, I’d almost buy one just for looks. Thing is sexy.

Nah. This passive cooler in particular wasn't even as "good" as others on the market. Passive can be great for very specific builds, but I'd still never recommend this one.

Noctua makes good stuff. I prefer passive builds over liquid these days

In general I believe that passive cooling is a very interesting topic, but this specific cooler sadly was not performing very well in benchmarks as far as I remember. I recently saw a test performed by der8auer, using the 95W TDP Intel i9-9900K, that reached 100°C in a couple minutes. Only while seriously undervolting it he was able to reach acceptable temperatures. The TDP by CPU manufacturers is often understated and the cooler manufacturers overstate theirs, so I think the only well applicable usage for this specific cooler would be CPUs at the lower end of the spectrum, unless heavily modified in its design.

Do you think it would cool more effectively, with a good case fan?

Well, airstream would probably always improve passive coolers, but I think it would still stand no chance against coolers that are designed for that in the first place. It has such low surface area to transfer the heat from the cooler to the air :/
