Heres the deal, personally i run a dell 3415w 3440x1440. I have a 8700k @5ghz, 32 gb 3200 ddr4, 2 nvidia 970 gtx in sli, ssd, etc... On modern games fully maxed out settings (no aa) i can run half of them above 100fps. The other half, your talking under 60 fps. Moving to a 1080 ti at one point netted about 7-10 fps more per game, so it was impossible to reach 144hz with gysnc. gsync is only worth it with 100-144 hz imo. Until volta drops (and maybe it wont even be able to perform these numbers who knows), 3440x1440 or 4k monitors gysnc high refresh rate monitors are pointless unless your buying it for the future.
Moving from 3 28 inch monitors on one setup 1920x1200 rez each 5760x1200 when setup as triples, and a 27in 4k monitor to my dell 34" ultrawide 3440x1440 monitor there is no going back size wise. Its also an IPS, and moving from a VA panel, its exceptionally better between the ghosting issues of VA panels and hte blacks and colors are so much better, IPS is the way to go.
Currently IMO the best way to go is 34" ultrawide 2560x1080 (which i set my res on that on my current dell 3415w. I max settings and run AA and the differences between 3440x1440 no aa and 2560x1080 with AA in games is extremly small quality wise. The only difference i notice is the font on the desktop isnt as sharp, and is inherently larger which can be adjusted. Theres an LG model thats 256x1080 144hz native 165hz OC gysnc. The only thing i could ask for different in this model is a bigger curve, and thats subjective. You wont get better than this, until Q2 this year when hte new gsync HDR monitors come around. If you dont want to hold off below is the model i suggest. Also posting a good 27" for others to consider. Otherwise hold off till the HDR gsync 144hz monitors coming.
LG 34UC89G-b 899.99 retial, can get it from electronic express for 699.99. if massdrop could do it for around 600 or lower, this would be a steal. http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34UC89G-B-ultrawide-monitor

DarknessAngelG sync is totally worth it at lower frame rates. That's one of it's best benefits. I would say it is great to have until you get down to 45 fps. But I would much rather game at ~60fps on gsync than i would at 80 fps with tearing or stutter.
Also, i play most titles at 1440p with 100fps no problem. There might be some settings that aren't on Ultra, but you really don't need all of those. Especially Anti Aliasing. I think you're right though, Volta will change the game. Should be right around the corner. We have the Titan V already, which means a 2080 or 2080ti is right around the corner. I'm guessing 6 months. I would expect a 2080ti to play most games at 60fps at 4k, or 3840x1440 (widescreen) at about 90fps. I think right now for Volta, 3840x1440 might be the sweet spot.

LinkOmegaWere probably playing different titles, its going to depend on the game, and how well it was coded. Something like overwatch is easy to push. Something like for honor, or forza 7 your talking more difficult. Like i said alot of games i can push to 100fps, but there are just as many i cant.
60hz-80hz your not going to notice a difference. i have a monitor i've overclocked to 75hz, and theres no visible difference. between 60 and 80 fps theres not a noticable difference to pay for gysnc. Just lock hte game a 60 fps by enabling vsync and triple buffering. Total waste of money for nothing IMO. This is a subjective matter though, and only my opinions.
Totally agree with hoping and thinking volta will run nearly everything at 90+fps at 3440x1440. It should be around the corner, this year definetly by q2 sometime. Already got the funds secured to dive in, test teh waters prior to purchasing a 120hz+ 3440x1440 monitor (we'll see these q2 i'm imagining) Although thats not 144+hz, theres a number of 100hz monitors out there that may be a better option. Personally i see no visible difference between 3440x1440 and 2560x1080 if i'm running full AA, so id rather take 2560x1080 at 144hz any day of the week with gysnc if i'm gaming as you'll notice a WAY better experience then 75-100 fps and hz with gsync, or 60fps vsync. If your using it for an office setting the 60hz monitors are going to be just fine as well, and i'd rather run 3440x1440 in that setting.

DarknessAngelyou can definitely have tearing, even at lower fps almost regardless of your gpu due to the nature of how certain things in game happen; going from 60 to 60 + g sync makes a huge difference, especially in games where it will go from rendering nothing to rendering massive explosions on the fly and with that comes tearing which isn't ideal and g sync removes this issue drastically (same with free sync) due to how the technologies work which i assume you know something of
