Disagree strongly. You may just not have invested in the right DAC+amp+headphone set yet (yes, that does mean money, but you *are* on a MBP). I much prefer my home setup to the DAC on my Mac on the go. iOS devices are even lower quality (though anything Apple is better than Android or Windows machines, generally).

joeltwilcoxFLAC files - VLC Player - analog out of MBP (leave MBP volume at max) to my tube preamp to a great set of headphones (Sennheiser HD800S in my case) and you have an incredible signal path. I’ve tried inserting very expensive dedicated DAC’s between the USB digital or optical digital out of the MBP and find zero difference (listening critically and I have very good ears). All I’m saying is, if you already have a MBP, there are better places in your signal path to spend your money.

JGaltDifferent strokes for different folks but given the cost of a macbook pro, I'd rather take a sub 1K Windows machine, and spend the rest of the savings on outboard audio gear. EMI is real no matter your computer manufacturer. Can I ask what DAC's you've used and why you're using a tube preamp vs. dedicated headphone amp for the HD800S?

ElectronicVicesThis is crazy talk on stilts. People buy Macs because the want a Mac. People buy Windoze because they wan't a Winbox. The idea that a Mac user would suddenly switch platforms to save money is as dumb as Windows user switching in order to piss away money. They're not interchangeable pieces; we have what we have for a reason, not by accident. VERY few Mac users are going to drop down to a Windows machine in order to afford more audio crap. A) they don't have to, and B) no one buys a laptop of any flavor, solely for music (musicians excepted). Sadly, it's WORK first music second, for most folks in the real world. What you'd rather is...blather ;- )

RayFRay I work for a software company and several people here have, in fact, done exactly what you claim no one would do. Apple does not equal "superior", you must evaluate each piece of gear on it's own merits and not blindly generalize an entire companies product line. The vast majority of people here have a mixture of Apple, Android, Windows and Linux systems in their personal and professional environments. They choose whichever solution is best for that particular job and refuse to use idiotic "words" like Windoze or iCrap or any other fanboy like statement.
Since you assert that WORK is the reason people should "step up" to a Mac system. Here are some videos that take the work MAC vs. Windows scenario to the upper echelon:

I won't be replying again, you just don't seem to get it.

ElectronicVicesPretty sure every Mac user has bumped in to you and your kind before and frankly you bore the shit out of us. We have our widows-blows videos and articles too. I won't bore you with them. Like most artists and most musicians, I'm not here to save money--I'm hear for the OS and UI--simple, clean, elegant. You like the stone ages, stay there. We've moved on.

ElectronicVicesBut.... you have to use windows... = no less than 20% less work (literally) in an enterprise environment + 40% extra stress and sadness.

MaxVonBaronOh and my Mac sounds amazing compared to my Cambridge audio DAC mini driving some Philips x2 earphones. I know the impedance drive(requirement) is not to bad, bat even so the MBP is impressive in comparison. The DAC is not the best, but reviewed very favourably..
