Recently found Drop and missed two R2R DAC sales so..

more_vert
Hey folks, still finding my way around some of Drops detail information but wanted to confirm what I've found with some of you. Looks like i've missed to ladder DAC sales and I can't find any in the near pipeline. Just wondering if any of you may know of up and coming R-2R DACs that are in Drops near future public release dates? Interested in a R-2R NOS tube DAC kit, but was hoping to listen and live with a resister based DAC for some time before laying the cash and time on a kit. Thanks for any information especially if it's secret info. vvcv

Folks have been wondering the same about the Airist/drop R-2R, and will it come back with a ‘balanced’ version as well?.. no word... I think R-2R is part of the future, very much so, so coming back. options today: http://soekris.dk/products.html

thanks Rastus. I'm curious about the Ares now. Have you done listen sessions with it while taking grey matter notes on the things that grab your ears attention when comparing it to a ESS or AKM chip? Those are the only two I've lived with for any extended period of time and would be curious to know your take on what the Ares really shines in next to either of these chips. If you don't mind, what other gear do you like paring with your Ares? How does the Ares sound with acoustic instruments? For the most part, I'm shiny new to the headphone world, and i'll be asking this question in another thread later, but what is your take on the La Figaro amp? I'd like to grab a tube amp (since i know their sound best) that will be with me for a few years. I really don't even know of the manufactures history, aside from DarkVoice being a liked amp in the HP dimension. For other topologies, I have the Cavalli on its way for my hybrid option. For SS i'm gonna pick up a THX by SMSL or Drop. As for tube amps, i'd prefer one that has speaker taps like the Musical Paradise 301 MK3 amp, however, I kind of get the feeling that speaker amps, with added headphone input(s), are not the strongest contenders for better headphone amps. Is this a wrong assumption, or are dedicated headphone amps really the way to go for better headphone sound signature and quality? So, would you grab the La Figaro if just getting into headphones and knowing what you know about the headphone universe? Sorry if I've got the wrong impression, but I'm assuming you're a headphone listener, only because I don't see many speakers peaking around corners hear at Drop. And sorry for all the questions man, I feel like i'm learning a lot of the basics again and don't mind at all if you prefer to stay on the DAC topic. Thanks for reading a this too!

vvcvSorry, skipped responding I guess,, since so many good questions, which to chew on first...? Let’s do the DAC first,, I believe R-2R, in its most basic form, to be the most true, in reproducing the detail level, we perceive as ‘real’. It got left behind in the DS chip rush, better-faster-cheaper, then faster-cheaper,, until we get to just cheaper... speed does not buy quality, the test tone temple does not define it, accurate analog reproduction of the captured signal, has to be done in its most simplistic form, with the largest data set available. What this experiment shows, blurring the line, between digital, and analog,, DSD played with no “chips” as “analog”: http://lampizator.eu/Fikus/DSD_DAC.html With an improvement in resistor quality, doable now, R-2R is poised to surpass other schemes, in reproducing music & voice, to a level, that we perceive as “real”. Comparisons were mostly with Korg DS DAC’s using Audiogate as the matched player, DSD & FLAC as formats. I do believe that some recordings have been mastered to different hardware signatures, so no one reproduction scheme will Mesh with all. Having all DAC’s; DS, SM & FPGA, is a benefit, rather than a distraction. I just lean r-2r, seems real...
