Funny that I don't even realize I love flashlights until I stop and think how many I've purchased (this is just the small stuff)... My purse light is probably still my favorite: maratac copper AAA latest revision. I do have the Prometheus copper QR on my keys but often forget it's there. The quick release and nichia LED of the Prometheus are the best attributes, but I dislike having to use rechargeable batteries. I bought the MD brass AAA when it was released but wasn't a fan of the button on such a small light. The Maratac copper in my purse never comes on by accident and the glow silicone head cover is a welcome addition. The Spalinger trit lantern is the best keychain item ever to find my keys in the depths of a dark purse.
Latest purchase is the newest olight s1 baton mini (cree for brightness vs nichia). I was truly surprised how tiny and how bright it is, plus how useful the magnet tail can be. Plus charging it thru the micro USB port in the battery itself is convenient. Time will tell how long that kind of battery can last since any USB port can wear out.
If I need serious light output, I'm usually on my ATV. I put a pair of Rigid industries D2 driving lights on the front rack (the cheapo $20 led pods on Amazon are NOT worth even that when you have experienced the quality of Rigid or Baja designs is another good one ) Turns night into day and makes night riding a hell of a lot of fun! I did replace my 4runner headlights w LEDs and now I'm in the process of replacing all the interiors as well. Love LED over halogen but aftermarket LEDs for cars just aren't quite there yet to keep up with the clean light and throw of my previous car's stock xenon lamps.

When I had received my Copper MassDrop/Lumintop AAA a few months ago my wife snatched it up, and I was like, “Wait!…What?!” 😧
Then I got her the Copper Olight i3E EOS (even smaller) and she declared, “Mine!” And I got my Copper MD light back. 🤗 Still not sure who ‘played’ who though. 🤔

And she loves the Embrite with the green trit that I got her not long ago.

What size trit tube is that, and where did you get it? Thanks! Love the copper Olight too!!!

Is that the embrite in the fob or tritium? I've had tritium alternatives and nothing quite compares to tritium as far as glow and not having to 'charge' it in order for it to be seen in the dark. I do like that small olight on the keyring too! The one thing that is nice about the copper QR (when I remember it, lol) is that I can leave my car running and pull the flashlight off to use quickly. But nowadays with cars having push button starts, I forget the light is on my keyring since I don't need to use my keys often. Either way, I'd rather have it there and need it than not!
The MD copper looks very nice too! I'm assuming it's the same push button on the end as the initial brass MD/lumintop collab? I kept having problems with it coming on in my purse so I got another maratac AAA for the twist on/off!

The Embrite slugs were just not as satisfying. So added the trits after the fact.
Yes, the MD light has a push button which I prefer. I like that it can be turned ON and used with one hand and doesn’t require the two-handed twisty motion to turn ON.

I'm right with you on the Lumintop. I bought the copper version as well and it's patina-ing up nicely. Actually better than the Maratac, which suprises me!

Working Knives
If you collect knives, the secret is to figure out things they can be doing for you when you aren’t in your pocket. We should swap some ideas, yeah? I will go first: some of mine are tasked with guarding my booze. [image] how about you guys?

Looking for 18350/cr123 ish sized EDC flashlight
~$50 for price I'm looking for a better(smaller) EDC light that I can more easily bring to work when my pockets are pretty full as is. For reference I have an Eagletac D25LC2 clicky, I love a lot about it, the moonlight "secret" low mode is great to start at in low light, and the medium level is just right in my opinion. One of the biggest boons for it is the pocket clip, and size...which is great for an 18650 light but not quite small enough for me most of the time. Anyways, if there's one must beyond it being small around 18350/cr123 battery size, it's that it have a neutral white LED, not a fan of the cool white...also a deep carry pocket clip as I don't like my eagtac light's tail sticking out. As I'd be using this at work(IT crawling under desks, etc.) max throw isn't the absolute most important thing, but I would like it to be decent. Beyond that here's a few preferences that boost value to me: -A nice really low "moonlight mode" ~1 lumen or less and if possible to start...

Petition to remove knives from EDC?
Is there any support for moving knives into their own category somewhere? As an international user I follow this community for things like wallets, keychains, etc. - things I would actually carry every day. Something seems to have changed though and now it's so inundated with knives I feel like I'm going to end up on some government watchlist somewhere - not to mention targeted ad networks thinking I'm interested in knives by association. Am I alone in thinking these should be in their own category so we can avoid this?

Copper Skyline
You can't buy it in stores but you can make your own. 1) Get 1 Skyline with G-10 and 1 set of copper scales for it. These are from Flytanium. The Skyline's the one I bought from Drop. [image] 2) Break it down. The pivot is T8 and the fasteners on the clip and spine are T6. Don't miss the fact that two fastener bolts are embedded in the thin G10 scale that you need to pop out and then set into the thin copper scale, so the long T6 fasteners running through the spine and backspacer have some steel threads to bite into on the other side. Be aware that these can be tricky to pop out. They're easier to 'rip' out by taking a pair of needlenose pliers and ripping away nearby G10 which of course ruins the old scale, but it won't be usable without the bolts anyway. Aside from that it's a simple breakdown that I believe I've documented elsewhere on this site already: you're just disconnecting Torx fasteners and the pivot and it all pops apart after that. Here it is all broken...

How To Dye Knife Scales
This is something I got into a while ago because I kinda like the idea of personalizing my knives and I like how certain colors look in the light. It's turned into a hobby. I don't know that there's a deeper meaning to it than that - I try to do things I like :) There's lots of resources available if you want to learn about dyeing things online, and considerably fewer out there about dyeing knife scales. There's walkthroughs for doing this on the stove, and you can try that if you want. Some of the methods I have seen are... well, dangerous, and not in a good way. Others work but have little room for error. so I ended up experimenting and drawing on background information a bit to come up with a process to do it. I use a microwave! In a lot of ways, it's much easier, and you aren't staining up a metal cookpot, and especially once you get used to it, it's a lot easier to get just the effect you want, no darker or lighter. The first and arguably most important step is the...

Ontario RAT Model 1, Copper and D2
wherein I braze a rat. [image] Specifically a RAT 1 in D2 and G-10 from Ontario Knives. The RAT is Ontario's best known collaboration with Randall's Adventure and Training (hence the RAT name), an outfit better known for their association with ESEE and for teaching people how to evade capture and survive in the jungle. The RAT Model 1 (and its slightly smaller brother the RAT Model 2) are fairly well known, very good budget knives. Fast flip, good ergos including a bit of thumb ramp, strong liner lock. No wiggle, no nonsense. The standard models come with AUS-8 -- with a good heat treat AUS 8 can be ok steel, but I wanted to go a little better for the Copper Rat. So I grabbed a D2 version with some light colored scales that I might customize later for some other project (light scales are a lot more interesting to dye.) So I have my threadlocker, my Torx T6 and T8, some lanyard stuff, and a pair of aftermarket copper scales from Flytanium. And a nearby pair of needlenose...
