As a onetime reviewer who occasionally made live recordings of acoustic music, my opinion of "experts" has declined drastically over the past 30 years. Most "experts" (be they amateur or professional) have no idea what they're talking about. Their views aren't based on systematic research (which is difficult and expensive), but on what they think is true or they'd like to be true. (The utter misunderstanding of the differences between analog and digital is a classic example.) I'm afraid you're going to have make your own mistakes, as I have over the past 50 years.

GrizzledGeezerIt doesn't help that music is a subjective experience. What one considers "better" sounding over something else is completely different from person to person.

ZeikCallawayNot if you're judging with respect to a live acoustical event, where "better" means "more-closely approximating the original sound".
