As a recording artist, we used to test recordings using crappy equipment. During recording, we use only the finest. While a transistor radio compared to high end audio stuff is vastly different, honestly balanced audio for me offers minimal improvements over regular cables. That said, every one's ears are different and what I can't hear doesn't mean others don't as well.

FrazamI just recently got some JBL LSR305s and have been told things varying from run it through a basic audio interface to I'm an ignorant waste of life if I don't buy $3,000+ of professional grade equipment for them.
I have since bought a Jotunheim w/balanced DAC upgrade, Modi 2 Uber, SYS, Mani, and a Topping D10 that I will be playing around with to figure out if it actually sounds better than RCA cables with 1/4" TRS adapters running through my current Focusrite Scarlet 6i6.
I've heard balanced can actually sound worse, but I am going to figure out what sounds best in my space. Every system is different.

Evil_ParoxysmHere's hoping you find what satisfies you :) my brother has been a hardcore audiophile for more than a decade, and he had it all when we were growing up. Cryogenically treated cables included.
Nowadays, after selling most of his stuff, he uses a cheap kz zsr and an audeze lcd-xc. He sticks to spotify premium, leaving his massive lossless collection of music to (virtual) dust.
When I asked why, he told me he couldn't hear the difference between his lossless files from Spotify's extreme setting, upgraded cables don't do a thing for him, and though he can hear differences in various 'phones, he says the sound upgrade from mid-fi to high-end headphones are not worth the price difference to him (though I guess the upgrade from chi-fi IEMs to high-end planar cups are worth keeping both).
While I patiently await the arrival of his hand-me-downs (according to him, a tube amp, a high-end senn, a mid-range fostex, and several doodads), I do hope my ears will be as satisfied as his.

Evil_ParoxysmI'm in the same situation as you (just saw your comment even as I commented above you). Would be curious to know if any of these DAC/amps with balanced outputs will have any noticeable difference with just using a Focusrite 6i6

cheese528I cancelled the Modi 2 Uber and went with the Jotunheim + Multibit DAC upgrade. Really loving the audio quality and the fact that its all in one with balanced ins and outs
