So, maybe I'm weird, but something that I am interested in but have a hard time finding:
An inexpensive* DAC with optical input and balanced (XLR) output. Something that would electrically gap the audio signal, unlike USB, to power studio monitors or whatever balanced headphone amp one wanted.
*(let's call inexpensive ~US$100)

SilentGhostThis would still cross the budget line all told, but not by a lot:

kukkurovacaDoes the Hifiberry accept optical input?
I'll admit to being woefully underinformed!

SilentGhostOhhh, sorry, probably not. There is an optical output board, but I guess not an input for the DAC.
Although FWIW, streaming to the Hifiberry would also provide an electrical gap...

SilentGhostProbably not close enough, but there's the Geschelli Enog Pro DAC:
1) Does have optical in (toslink, I believe) 2) Only RCA out, but can get a cable (~$20, balanced 2x RCA male, 2x 3-pin xlr, 2' long) 3) Cost: $200 (DAC) + $20 (cable)
Or, ifi Nano iOne, same input, same output, still need cable - but the iOne can be found for less (usually $200, but I just bought one from major outlet for $160)...bonus! includes HiFi Bluetooth!
I had same desire for a DAC with those inputs/outputs, but settled for iOne plus regular RCA cable. Goodluck, SilentGhost.
SilentGhostThat's a real tight budget for something that typically kicks in at the $250-$300 range, especially if one is talking truly balanced and not just XLR outputs. Straight USB DAC's under $100 are available from numerous manufacturers, add in optical and the list drops a bit... add in XLR output it drops beyond any example I can think of and a true differential balanced signal will only add to the cost. The closest to your budget that I can think of is the TEAC UD301... used.
Edit: A handful of Emotiva XDA 1 or 2 may be floating around in the used market. They might get you below $200 but I just don't see a way to get everything you want with your budget. Can I ask why these features are of particular interest to you, there may be a cheaper alternative solution?

ElectronicVicesI agree that such a device is hard to find!
I think the bigger issue is not that it would be hard or expensive to make such a device- such an 'interface' doesn't need a headphone amp- and most purport to have very nice headphone amps. I have the Topping DX7 (previous model to the DX7s) that does what I want, purchased through Massdrop, and should be able to hit US$200 if it lacked the headphone amp section.
A basic, clean interface should be able to be built for US$100, I think.

kukkurovacaMy follow-on concern with 'streaming' is now latency; by putting a computer (albeit a small, application-focused one) in the loop you are providing the same basic electrical isolation, which is great!, but latency for gaming might be an issue too.
Just something to think about!
