HD58x vs HD6XX for a newbie

more_vert
So, hello everyone! I'm currently just getting started in this whole HiFi-audio bussiness after a friend showed me his -quite impressive- headphones. Searchin around, I've found two models that really caught my attention: the HD28x Jubilee and the HD6XX, but I'm not really sure of which one should I buy. Not only is price important to me and my limited budget (so, if the HD58X is only very slightly worse but much cheaper, well then the 58 it is!) I also don't have any amps or gadgets. I also would be using the headphones for gaming, if that makes any difference. May be a good time to ask too, do I really need amps and all that stuff?

Slight differences. Get the 58X if you plan on just buying one system and being done, but if you want to move on to a better system as time moves on, the 6XX scales all the way to TOTL gear like the crazy expensive Woo or DNA gear and is more refined. Technically, you already have an amp and a DAC. They're built into your phone/motherboard/console. So no, you don't. However, neither headphone will be that great straight-out without a dedicated chain.

If you don't want extra gadgets to run them, go 58x. The 6XX really need to be powered properly.

Do NOT go for theHD6xx without an amp. Even with an amp the 6xx needs as much power as you can throw at it.

I actually like the 58X a lot better. Has more bass and when you take out the foam, they sound amazing. Also, they are easier to drive.
Amps and DACs are necessary for optimal headphone and sound performance. There are some good budget options. Go with the HD58X if you want some fun, punchy headphones with bass
