Hi! I’ve been quilting for decades, love it, am a fabric-holic and have worked in a quilt shop and taught beginning quilting. I think the most important thing for a beginner is to understand how important precision is. If you don’t measure, cut and then sew your quarter inch seams accurately your finished quilt measurements won’t work out and your quilt won’t be straight. Having the right tools, starting with a sewing machine that does it’s job nicely, cutting mats, rulers and rotary cutters etc are necessary. There are a lot of great things on the internet but nothing beats a beginning quilt class at a good quilt shop for starters. The world would be a better place if everyone was a quilter!

busybee17I sure agree that the world would be nicer with more quilters in it!! I must add though, that Craftsy classes are an EXCELLENT way to learn to quilt....MUCH cheaper than live classes and one can watch forever and as many times as they want. There is lots of interaction with the teacher and classmates, too. I have never taken a live class, but I have learned a lot in my Craftsy classes and have never paid more than $20 for one.
