Can you mix diffent fabrics in quilt tops?

patbuYou can, but.... it is best to use fabrics that need the same care. For instance, cotton and silk need different wash temperatures , so unless you want to wash the entire top like silk, and the owners know that, stick to all cotton or all silk.

patbuIt's important to know that flannel shrinks more than regular quilting cottons, so you should always wash it first. This is especially important if you are going to mix flannels and regular cottons in a quilt, so that when the quilt is washed you won't see the flannel parts of the quilt shrinking differently and pulling the quilt in funky directions. or stressing your seams.

wordygirlIt helps, also, to iron it with starch. It gives the flannel more body while sewing.

JbhmI had not thought of using starch with flannel. Good idea. We could be twins.
