I worked at a fabric store when I turned 16, sewed my children’s clothes (to a certain age, lol!) and have been quilting with my MIl for 30years! I have a mid-arm quilting machine and do all my own. But I’ve never used Minky.

OHstarI’ve used minky for the back of children’s quilts. They love the feel of it. A couple of notes about using it. 1. It will dull a rotary blade. Change or sharpen it once done. 2. It will dull needles too. Change it when you’re done. I do this after each larger quilt I make as a habit anywa. 3. It will leave lint on your cutting mat and in your machine. Make sure to give them a through dusting out. I use a poly thread with it, just like I would with fleece. Happy Quilting 😁

RarejemDo you tie or quilt the minky backed quilts?

WintersewistI’m not found of tying quilts. Fully quilting on minky can be difficul. What I like to do is a bit of a cross between the two. I mark it like I would for typin, then quilt a small, about 1/2 - 1”, circle or design.

WintersewistMinky is much easier to quilt if you use the 505 adhesive spray. The quilt sandwich is totally stable and in my experience makes a beautiful back. I’m not fond of tying either. The batting in the sandwich travels to any untied place after time. Lumpy quilt.

Gizmo1I have tied three quilts and never had that problem. Zone two of them cotton batting was used. The first one was a poly-type. I was taught to stretch hand and tie at the furthest point in my hand, no further. Perhaps you put ties too far apart?

RarejemWhen I have cut fabrics like minky I have my vacuum cleaner right by my cutting mat and right after I cut the fabric, I don’t move it at all, I vacuum up the mess and then move the fabric. It’s a little bit of a hassle but the mess it makes if you don’t go this is ridiculously hard to clean up. The tiny pieces of the fabric go everywhere!! It reminds me of glitter. You never really completely get rid of it. Lol
