was it a big leap switching from a standard layout to ortho? id love to save space on my desk, but im not sure how much i rely on bigger sizes for certain keys or if its something im just used to

I definitely prefer smaller layouts because I actually remapped most of my bigger keyboard layouts based on my 40% layout. As for the ortholinear key positions, I really don't have very strong opinion one way or another. If I really have to choose, I slightly prefer the ortho layout. You really have to commit to it for a long period time before you feel the benefit. I think for most people the learning curve is probably not worth it. But, if you really like to tinker with your keyboard (like me), then I would definitely recommend giving ortho a try. Moving over to ortho really forced me to think critically about the existing keyboard layout that I have been using.

What are those orange keycaps on the bottom right keyboard? SA profile? They look great!

mxibYup, they’re SA caps. I got them from https://ohkeycaps.com/.

This is exactly the path I'm going down. I've been using a Logitech trackball mouse for years, just got into the ortho world and I'm still getting used to it. I'm also loving the full orange keyboard, that looks amazing!

Can you share your layout? I'm trying to find the smallest keyboard I can find. I have a planck now and I'm trying to get used to missing the number row.

ajmaMy layout is pretty complicated. You have to know QMK & C to understand it: https://github.com/newtonapple/qmk_firmware/tree/dev/layouts/community/ortho_5x12/newtonapple. Essentially, I'm using a 40% core layout and build on top of that. You'll see a lot of my layout reflected in my 5x15 ortho layout as well: https://github.com/newtonapple/qmk_firmware/blob/dev/layouts/community/ortho_5x15/newtonapple/keymap.c. This is better documented but slightly outdated. Check it out if you want to get a sense of what I do w/ my layout.

How do you like the preonic + trackball mouse? The preonic to me is gold, just waiting on my holy pandas.

jonmcconYup, I love the ortho layout. After switching to smaller keyboard + trackball, all my wrist pains went away.

bomberstudiosHave you tried a split ortho? There a ton of great ones and you might enjoy them as it looks like we have some similar taste in keebs. I would recommend the Nyquist or Levinson but there are some really interesting new ones out there with crazy design elements.

heathmYes, I have couple of Houndstoothes (40% split). It's a neat nice design if you don't need fancy LEDs since only require 1 Pro Micro.
