So I bought a Asgard 3 with the built in dac which is not multibit. Then I bought a very similar amp, the smsl and the mono price thx. The Asgard is richer sounding but noisier. Thx was cleaner and I eventually sold the Asgard 3 for the thx. Less noise is less listening fatigue. I was just comparing the amps. There are smaller differences between the thx amps. The mono price is the best built. The mass drop is next followed by the smsl.

Not really fair to compare because, well, one has a DAC because of the modular nature of the product and the other does not. However, as far as the amplification stage is concerned, do you want an all-in-one solution with single ended inputs or a balanced option? What are you attempting to drive? Are you just using this as a desktop setup for headphones or are you looking to add additional peripherals? These are some of the questions you should ask yourself, the answer should be readily apparent after.

dj_toastThanks for the reply. I know its not exactly an apples to apples comparison, and I’m new to the audio world... Currently using my MacBook -> Schitt Asgard 3 -> Audeze LCDi3. Not balanced, just a 3.5mm jack. I realize I’d need to pair with a DAC as well. I guess my question was more “how does the 789 w/ a recommended DAC compare to the Asgard 3 multibit.
