I already own the HD660s, and the HD598se(among many others). Would there be any real point in picking this or the 6xx up? I have always heard s much about these two cans, I feel like I'm missing out..lol Thanks!

Thanks, I had a feeling it wouldn't be worth owning, at this time. Although, the sale prices, are making it awfully tempting! I appreciate your help.

shkdwnstThe HD58x is simply the same headphone as the HD660s with the following changes:
  • 1. Higher price mark
  • 2. Different colouring (hd660s frame is mat black, hd58x is glossy black, with Grey grids instead of black)
  • 3a. Same metal core driver inside (although some say it isn’t but they are wrong, believe). This driver was originally introduced for the HD700 and modified for the 660s and HD58X. It is not exactly the same, but originated from the same new generation of 150 ohms drivers. Sennheiser will surely not acknowledge that the 190$ Drop HD58X has the same drivers as its higher price HD660S sold through retail stores. They would break their marketing strategy through Drop and regular retailers.
  • 3b. Hd660s has also foam covering but on the center outer core of the driver, the hd58x has none and the absence of foam on the HD58X increases the bass response. If you care you may simply stick a small circular foam piece on the center of the driver to clone the HD58x into a HD660s, the change would trigger significant bass attenuation similar to the HD660S. Look for HD58X recommended modifications by “Solderdude starting on page 12: https://www.mediafire.com/file/8dr7hp34vq11aag/HD58X_evaluation.pdf/file
  • 3c. HD58x also has circular foam isolation sheets on the inside of the grids for aesthetics purpose only (you can’t see the driver inside of the grids from the outside), but if you care this may be reverted by taking out the circular foam sheets from the HD58x. This will slightly change the looks of the grids from the exterior. This will not change the sound. The purpose of this foam is to protect the drivers from outside dust.
  • 4. The cable is shorter of the HD58x: 6ft with. 3.5mm mini-plug with standard plug adapter. Hd 660s has a 9ft cable with standard plug, with 3.5mm adaptor included. HD660s has also a pentacon 4.4 mm balanced cable included. All of these cables may be exchanged between Sennheiser series 600 headphones. You may buy compatible aftermarket cables if you care or simply purchase a genuine 9ft cable from Sennheiser for your HD58x (the best cable in my opinion would be the 9ft cable from the HD600 which has a mini-plug ending with a standard plug adapter included for less than 20$ on Sennheiser web site or Amazon).
  • 5. In conclusion, if you perform simple reversible modifications listed above, then your HD58x can be transformed into a HD660s clone with different aesthetics for a far better price than the standard HD660s pricing. If slight acoustic differences remain with these changes they are not significant, negligible, in my opinion.

If you want a little more oomph in the low end, a little more zing in the top end, aren't too concerned with micro details, and are looking for something slightly easier to drive, you'll need this one.
