I had a number of watches prior to joining MD, all quartz save for my Swatch Sistem Blue. Massdrop accelerated my collecting with a number of impulse buys as @BF_Hammer said in his post. I feel the opposite of you, SpiritOne, when you say "... I'd have initially acquired several pieces I'd come to regret."
Through my own impulsiveness I clicked "Join Drop" on 13 different watches since joining the site for a pair of headphones in May of '17. I only regretted 2 of the 13, one of which Massdrop was offering a return on and the other one I flipped. Of the 13: I canceled two of them before the drop ended, returned one to MD, and flipped five of the remaining ten. The survivors are below and a couple of them are among my favorite watches (the Oris and the SKX).

The biggest impact was helping to facilitate my switch from a largely quartz collection to now primarily automatic and mechanical. Another was turning me in to a Seikholic (two of the culprits seen above, my first Seikos...I now have 7 and have been considering dipping my toe in to vintage Seikos).
Another was seeing people posting on the forums (Jimmy) and turning me in to a serious strap swapper. I had largely left watches on their stock straps until about a year or so ago. Now I switch all the time unless I find something I am in love with (see the razor wire on the SKX). Massdrop was also my intro to Nick Mankey designs, and I now have several of his straps (see Oris above, a couple more on shelf below).

I've also gotten a couple of watch boxes from here on Massdrop that are way nicer than the cheap one I have had form Amazon for some time. I need to figure out a better solution for straps and keep them better organized. Right now the drawers are overflowing and spilling out on top.
All of this has helped me slow my collecting down and focus on pieces I really want in my collection. I look at it as trial and error and Massdrop has helped me in figuring out what I really want to have in my collection. So have all the people here on the boards who post in Wrist Check or generally share related content!

As for strap swapping.............. serial swapper here! Yeah, I do it all the time, my personal favorite is BlueShark at the moment.
