What impact has Massdrop had on your watch collection?

more_vert
Anyhow, I honestly don't think I'd have as many watches as I currently do.... or at the very least I'd have initially acquired several pieces I'd come to regret. My first real automatic piece, was the Seiko Sarb 035. Which I purchased from Massdrop.

This has been a STRAP MONSTER for me, my first real automatic leading to other automatic watches, first real fortay into the sarb line (I'd buy the 017 later)

{Needless to say, it was a really nice way to start my collection.

From there I bought my first diver, the srp313k2

which led to several more divers!

Like my most recent purchase (and most commonly worn watch atm)

So, needless to say........ it's helped shape my collection, as I got into watches around the same time I discovered Massdrop. However, everyone has their own story and do share yours ;-)

Also, feel free to just post pictures of watches you've bought from here, w/ a story of what you've done w/ it or so.

Since I had my dream watch, Navitimer, wasn't really looking for anything in particular. But I'd seen the Laco fliegers elsewhere online but never pulled the trigger. Then I saw the MD version for much less and had to grab one. Love it. Then the Glycene combat sub stealth version came up. I was smitten again. So the collection has grown a bit thanks to MD.

My first watch, not inclusive of those cheap digital ones I had as a child, was a gift to me from my father when we were visiting Paris. It was a Swatch Irony Midday Sun, and I had never seen anything so beautiful before. It was from then that a spark was kindled, and after I stumbled upon Massdrop while hunting for audio gear, I chanced upon their watch drops. Needless to say, my 2nd, 3rd and 4th watches are all from here! XD

Great story...thanks for sharing!
Just curious if if you have any experience with a Tissot Visodate and how it compares to your SARB035? I’ve been toying with the idea of picking up an 035 or an 033 or a Visodate, but I haven’t had the opportunity to try either on.
I already own an SARB017 and the SARB065 Cocktail Time, so I am hesitant about opting for another light-dialed dressy watch. (I also prefer the 39mm alpinist size over my cocktail time).

Mac1984FWIW, I had a Visodate and ended up returning it. As soon as I put it on I realized that the minute hand was too short and didn't even come close to the chapter ring/minute marking hashes.
I never noticed it in the product photos, but it drove me absolutely batty after trying to live with it for a couple of days

I consider myself a newbie hunter. I started my collection seriously about 3 years ago. My relationship with MD is more about the hunting for the right price of a automatic timepiece that not necessarily needs to be a high-end watch or vintage piece. So far i bought 2 pieces from MD and a beautiful suede belt. Cheers

Massdrop is a great place to learn about new hobbies and passions, period. I was well into watches by the time I stumbled over here on a random tip from a leather company, but I've stayed for the friendly and informative posters here on the boards!
I find that the prospect of buying watches is too personal for me to buy one on a whim here on MD (not saying I wouldn't, I just haven't yet!). I play the long game with most watch purchases, with the exception of the occasional ebay find, of course.
There are a few other robust categories here outside of the watch-dom, the audiophile community especially, where there are some very cool MD-made collaboration products.
I had a number of watches prior to joining MD, all quartz save for my Swatch Sistem Blue. Massdrop accelerated my collecting with a number of impulse buys as @BF_Hammer said in his post. I feel the opposite of you, SpiritOne, when you say "... I'd have initially acquired several pieces I'd come to regret."
Through my own impulsiveness I clicked "Join Drop" on 13 different watches since joining the site for a pair of headphones in May of '17. I only regretted 2 of the 13, one of which Massdrop was offering a return on and the other one I flipped. Of the 13: I canceled two of them before the drop ended, returned one to MD, and flipped five of the remaining ten. The survivors are below and a couple of them are among my favorite watches (the Oris and the SKX).

The biggest impact was helping to facilitate my switch from a largely quartz collection to now primarily automatic and mechanical. Another was turning me in to a Seikholic (two of the culprits seen above, my first Seikos...I now have 7 and have been considering dipping my toe in to vintage Seikos).
Another was seeing people posting on the forums (Jimmy) and turning me in to a serious strap swapper. I had largely left watches on their stock straps until about a year or so ago. Now I switch all the time unless I find something I am in love with (see the razor wire on the SKX). Massdrop was also my intro to Nick Mankey designs, and I now have several of his straps (see Oris above, a couple more on shelf below).

I've also gotten a couple of watch boxes from here on Massdrop that are way nicer than the cheap one I have had form Amazon for some time. I need to figure out a better solution for straps and keep them better organized. Right now the drawers are overflowing and spilling out on top.
All of this has helped me slow my collecting down and focus on pieces I really want in my collection. I look at it as trial and error and Massdrop has helped me in figuring out what I really want to have in my collection. So have all the people here on the boards who post in Wrist Check or generally share related content!

Vintage1982BenzI have to say the watches in the box to the right would be my choice :D
As for strap swapping.............. serial swapper here! Yeah, I do it all the time, my personal favorite is BlueShark at the moment.
SpiritOneBluShark is very nice. I've got a couple of theirs showing up in the mail tomorrow, actually :)

I had a well-established watch collection before joining massdrop last year. So the effect on me is not much other than I have 3 watches +1 incoming that I likely would not have sought out to get otherwise. I like the watches I bought a lot, but truthfully they are impulse buys. Before joining I normally spent weeks-months considering a new purchase, and that was a way of seeing of it was an infatuation instead of a true desire. I kind of slipped back to collecting habits I had 10 years ago when I did a lot of impulse collecting.
I started with the Sturmanskie Gagarin drop. I actually started collecting Russian watches 14 years ago, and I had a Ukrainian-assembled "Franken-fake" (repop dial) of the original long ago. I have always loved the dial design, and seeing the drop rekindled my desire to have one again.

The Orient Star Classic came, well I never managed to get an Orient power-reserve watch before. And this had a newer movement with hack-handwind, so that old objection was not there. I am a big fan of mid-century watch styles too.
search
Which brings up the Junhans Max Bill. I like Bauhaus-inspired watches too. I had a battery change go bad with my Braun analog quartz last year, so I rationalized that this would be the replacement. LOL. There are some design similarities.

And coming likely tomorrow is my new Orient Mako II Pepsi version. I had the original in black more than 10 years ago. I regretted going cheap with that purchase and getting the rubber strap instead of a bracelet. I also regretting getting black instead of blue. I purged-out a lot of watches I picked up for less than $100 starting 10 years ago in a "quality over quantity" move. Now that Orient has improved the watch, I have no problem with getting another at the price of the last drop. I always thought the Mako was an under-appreciated watch.

BF_HammerThat Orient Star looks exquisite! I have to agree w/ the quality over quantity part....... if you're never going to wear it....... well in that case it's just a waste of funds.

I came to Massdrop for the keyboards, and then bought two Seikos, a dressy automatic and a dressy quartz chronograph. From these I learned I like automatics, hatred chronographs (eyesight and time setting issues), hatred gold colored metal, could wear up to 45 mm, and more. At that point I mostly went to Jomashop, Amazon. auctions, Kickstarter, and maker websites to buy.
I pretty much sated myself on watches and embarked on a strap craze, much of which involved Vulture Premium straps here. Now I'm done with that.
Now I am in stasis.
A couple things I could see myself getting, but which can wait, are an automatic einzeiger and a quartz tritium watch (sleeping, and as a guaranteed right-time grab and go watch).
