I'm looking forward to trying this out snow camping in fly-only mode. Looks like it would be a good alternative to a BD Beta Light.

I would stomp out a platform for the entire fly area first, and then pack down additional snow really well where the poles are going to go (or put the handles on top of something wider, like a mug or a chunk of bark), and put a wall around the edges of the fly to block drafts and spindrift. And I would dig a tunnel entrance that goes under the fly, so that I need to step down and crawl completely under the fly to get in, and can then stand inside and climb up onto the sleeping platform. Like a quinzee, but way less work.
danfrisbeemanThat sounds awesome! Yeah Ive heard of folks using like, mason jar lids (after packing of course) but have never actually tried it. I usually get lazy and just sleep in a tent. Your plan sounds like a great middle ground.
